Description

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard’s Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2021 is one of the domaine’s most coveted and limited bottlings, with only five barrels produced in this vintage—barely a third of a normal crop. Drawn from one of Vosne’s most illustrious premier cru sites, it marries intensity and finesse in a deeply serious, ageworthy expression of Pinot Noir. This is a benchmark Burgundy for collectors seeking the profound, slow-burning side of Vosne-Romanée.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Malconsorts shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby hue that hints at both concentration and finesse. The nose opens gradually, revealing pure notes of cherry and wild raspberry intertwined with blood orange zest, sweet exotic spices, dried rose petals and a delicate, almost chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tightly woven and layered, with a precise core of red fruit framed by powdery, fine-grained tannins. The structure is serious and somewhat reserved in its youth, echoing the cuvée’s reputation as one of the slowest to evolve in the Cathiard cellar. There is a lovely interplay of succulence and tension, with lifted acidity carrying flavors of red berries, citrus oil, subtle spice and floral tones through a long, poised finish. While already complex aromatically, this 2021 will reward patience; it has very good to excellent aging potential, showing its best over 10–20 years from the vintage, and likely beyond in top cellars.

Production
Aux Malconsorts is one of the crown jewels of Vosne-Romanée, lying on the southern side of the village near La Tâche, with shallow, limestone-rich clay soils that naturally limit yields and promote intensity and precision. In 2021, the vintage’s challenging weather and frost further reduced the crop, resulting in only five barrels being produced. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is known for meticulous work in the vineyard—careful canopy management, strict green harvesting where necessary, and manual picking at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes are typically sorted by hand, then fermented with great care to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, with a judicious use of new French oak barrels for élevage. The result is a wine that combines the power and depth of this great premier cru with the refinement and seamless texture that have made Cathiard one of Burgundy’s most sought-after domaines.

Food & Serving
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts is at its best alongside refined, aromatic dishes that match its depth without overwhelming its nuance. Think roast pigeon or duck with cherry or orange accents, veal with truffled jus, Bresse chicken with morels, or delicately prepared lamb. Earthy plates such as wild mushroom fricassée, game birds, or dishes featuring black truffle also work beautifully, as do aged but not overly powerful cheeses like Comté or mild tommes. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in large Burgundy stems to allow the wine to unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth can help soften the structure and open the bouquet; for well-aged bottles, a gentle, brief decant is recommended mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a small, highly regarded family estate based in Vosne-Romanée, and over the last few decades it has become one of the most revered names in Burgundy. Originating from modest holdings, the domaine has steadily built a reputation for producing some of the most sensual yet precise Pinot Noirs in the Côte de Nuits, with a strong emphasis on low yields, careful vineyard stewardship and exacting cellar work. Cathiard’s wines, especially from top sites like Aux Malconsorts, are now among the most sought-after in the region, regularly praised by critics and collectors alike for their purity of fruit, textural finesse and faithful expression of terroir. Their limited production and consistent excellence make them a reference point for modern Vosne-Romanée.
