Description
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard’s Romanée-Saint-Vivant 2023 is a beautifully restrained Grand Cru from one of Burgundy’s most admired addresses. Crafted from Pinot Noir and aged in around two-thirds new oak, it focuses on precision, transparency, and grace rather than sheer power—showing the kind of finesse that has made the site legendary.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a deeply luminous ruby color with impressive clarity. The aromatics lean toward red and black cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, and subtle spice, with a polished mineral edge and a touch of oak in the background. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and highly refined, with filigreed tannins, excellent balance, and a supple, elegant flow. This is a wine built on harmony and detail, offering immediate charm but also the structure to develop complexity over many years.
The finish is long, poised, and delicately layered, with the kind of understated depth that rewards patient cellaring. While already captivating in its youth, it should evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 20 years, gaining more nuance, perfume, and tertiary character.
Production
Romanée-Saint-Vivant sits in the heart of Vosne-Romanée, on one of Burgundy’s most celebrated Grand Cru climats, where limestone-rich soils and a privileged mid-slope position help Pinot Noir achieve remarkable aromatic detail and finesse. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is known for careful vineyard work and selective harvesting, aiming to capture the purity and precision of each site. In 2023, the wine was matured in around two-thirds new oak, a regimen that adds texture and frame while preserving the vineyard’s delicate expression.
Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for refined dishes such as roast quail, duck breast, pigeon, truffled poultry, or mushroom risotto, as well as gently aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider opening the bottle 30–60 minutes before drinking to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting is optional, but a short decant can help if the wine is tasted young.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is one of the most respected family domaines in Vosne-Romanée, with a reputation for producing wines of precision, depth, and exceptional site expression.
