Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a beautifully characterful southern Rhône red, made from old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre planted in the 1960s and 1970s. Sourced from the sandy, stony terraces of Gigondas, it combines generosity, finesse, and a strong sense of place, while reflecting the traditional craftsmanship that has long defined this appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dark color that hints at its concentration. The nose opens with ripe cherry and blackberry, followed by layers of liquorice, dried herbs, spice, and a subtle garrigue character that gives the wine its Mediterranean identity. The palate is rich and focused, with mature tannins, fresh acidity, and an elegant structure that keeps the wine lifted rather than heavy. Dark fruit and savory herbal notes carry through to a long, refined finish. While already expressive with decanting, it has the depth and balance to develop beautifully over the next 8–10 years.

Production
The grapes come from old vines rooted in the sandy, rocky terraces of Gigondas, where the soils help preserve freshness while encouraging concentration and complexity. Harvesting is carried out with care to ensure optimal ripeness, and fermentation takes place with native yeasts, followed by an extended maceration to build color, aroma, and structure. The wine is then aged for around 12 months in large, older oak foudres and bottled without fining or filtration to preserve purity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for robust dishes such as lamb, game, stews, and grilled meats. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting if drinking it young to open up its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins. It also has the structure to age gracefully in bottle, rewarding patience with added depth and nuance.
