Description
Domaine Rieffel Pinot Noir Hagel Bio 2022 is a finely etched organic Pinot Noir from Alsace, crafted to showcase purity, precision and terroir rather than power. Sourced from the single site “Hagel”, it combines vibrant red fruit with a distinctly mineral backbone, offering a style that is closer to Burgundy in spirit than to the stereotype of aromatic Alsace whites. Certified organic and made by one of Mittelbergheim’s most quality‑driven estates, it’s a characterful, food‑friendly red that rewards attentive drinkers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Hagel Pinot Noir shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a bright, limpid core that speaks to its finesse and moderate extraction. Swirl the wine and you’ll notice fine, slow‑moving legs that hint at concentration without heaviness.
The nose is expressive yet elegant, with notes of wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry coulis layered over rose petals, subtle cranberry, and a touch of crushed stone. Hints of dried herbs, white pepper and a gentle, refined oak or élevage character (more spice than toast) add complexity without masking the fruit.
On the palate, this is a lithe, medium‑bodied Pinot Noir with vibrant acidity and silky, finely grained tannins. Juicy red berries, sour cherry and redcurrant are framed by a cool, stony minerality and a savoury undertone—think dried thyme, a whisper of forest floor and a light, salty edge on the finish. The 2022 vintage brings a sense of ripe, clean fruit, but the structure remains focused and precise, making the wine refreshing rather than opulent. Enjoyable now for its brightness and perfume, it should evolve gracefully over the next 4–7 years, gaining a bit more earthiness and complexity while retaining its core of red fruit.
Production
The Hagel cuvée comes from organically farmed vineyards in Alsace, where Domaine Rieffel cultivates Pinot Noir on well‑drained, limestone‑rich and marl soils around Mittelbergheim—a sector long admired for its tension and minerality. The combination of relatively cool climate, good altitude and stony terroir allows the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving aromatic freshness and natural acidity. Harvest is carried out by hand, ensuring careful selection of bunches right in the vineyard. In the cellar, the Pinot Noir is typically vinified with a gentle touch: partial or full destemming depending on the year, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and a moderate maceration to extract fine tannins rather than density. Aging often takes place in a mix of older barrels and/or neutral vessels to avoid overt oak influence, allowing the varietal character and the Hagel site’s mineral signature to shine through, all while respecting organic principles from vine to bottle.
Food & Serving
This elegant Alsace Pinot Noir is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast with cherries, pork tenderloin, veal, or herb‑crusted lamb, as well as with charcuterie, mushroom risotto, and lighter game dishes such as rabbit or guinea fowl. It also works well alongside semi‑soft cheeses like Tomme, Reblochon or a mild Munster, and earthy vegetable dishes featuring beetroot, lentils or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 14–16 °C to highlight its aromatics and freshness; avoid serving too warm, which can blur its delicacy. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, but it is not strictly necessary—simply pouring into good Burgundy stems and giving it air in the glass will be enough for it to unfold.
