Description
Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas is a deeply traditional and generously powerful Rhône red, crafted by siblings Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, the seventh generation to farm this historic estate. Made primarily from Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre, it captures the classic warmth, structure, and charm that have made Gigondas one of the Southern Rhône’s most respected appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark, насыщенно colored profile with plenty of depth and concentration. The nose is full of dark cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper, liquorice, and a subtle smoky edge, delivering exactly the kind of aromatic intensity that Rhône lovers look for.
On the palate, the wine is rich and layered, with plush dark fruit framed by savoury southern French spice and a velvety texture that gives it both power and elegance. It is already drinking beautifully, but its structure and balance suggest at least another decade of rewarding ageing ahead.
Production
The grapes come from the domaine’s own vineyards in Gigondas, where old vines and a Mediterranean Rhône climate help produce naturally concentrated fruit. Harvesting is done by hand, the bunches are fully destemmed before pressing, and fermentation lasts around 30 days before the wine is matured for up to two years in large, old foudres of up to 13,000 liters. It is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its character and depth.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, game, beef stew, grilled steaks, and rich Mediterranean dishes such as lamb with herbs or ratatouille. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for one to two hours if opening young, as this will help the aromas open up and soften the wine’s powerful structure.
Producer
Domaine Raspail-Ay is a benchmark estate in Gigondas and has been in the Ay family for seven generations, giving it deep roots in the region’s winemaking history. Now led by Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, the domaine is known for producing authentic, classically styled Gigondas with impressive balance, longevity, and a strong sense of place.
