Description
Domaine Ponsot Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru Cuvée Très Vieilles Vignes 2010 is a benchmark Grand Cru Burgundy from one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most revered domaines. Made from exceptionally old Pinot Noir vines, including some over a century old, it delivers remarkable depth, finesse, and a sense of aristocratic precision that has made Clos Saint-Denis one of the most admired sites in the Côte de Nuits.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows the elegance and concentration you expect from a great Grand Cru, with a bright, refined profile rather than brute power. The nose unfolds in layers of red cherry, raspberry, violet, and rose petal, gradually opening to forest floor, dried flowers, oriental spice, and subtle mineral tones.
The palate is both intensely flavored and almost weightless in texture, with pure Pinot Noir fruit carried by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Red berries, spice, and mineral nuances linger through a long, polished finish. While beautifully expressive now, this is a wine with exceptional aging potential and will continue to gain complexity over decades.
Production
The wine comes from Clos Saint-Denis, one of the most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, known for producing wines of perfume, nuance, and exceptional balance. Domaine Ponsot’s parcel is planted with very old Pinot Noir vines, some exceeding 100 years of age, which naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s concentration and depth.
The domaine is known for a meticulous, terroir-driven approach, including patient harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar. The result is a wine that reflects both the character of the site and the clarity of the vintage, with the 2010 growing season delivering impressive structure, freshness, and precision.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for refined dishes such as roast duck, squab, venison, wild mushroom risotto, or game birds with a light sauce. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Époisses or a well-matured Comté. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics to fully open.
Producer
Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most respected historic domaines, based in Morey-Saint-Denis and closely associated with some of the region’s finest Grand Cru sites. The family has built its reputation on precision, longevity, and a deeply traditional approach to winemaking, with a particular focus on expressing terroir rather than oak or extraction. Over the years, the domaine has earned a near-legendary status among Burgundy collectors for producing wines of rare purity, complexity, and age-worthiness.
