The 2000 Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères is a benchmark-style Rhône red that combines rare concentration with real pedigree. Drawn from the estate’s oldest vines and produced in very limited quantity, it has earned a reputation in blind tastings and was widely praised by Robert Parker as a potential “wine of the vintage.”

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an inky, deep purple color that hints at its power and richness. The nose is layered and expressive, offering blackberry, cherry, and raspberry liqueur, lifted by notes of licorice, mineral nuances, and acacia flower. The palate is full-bodied and voluptuous, with sweet, polished tannins and remarkable concentration. Despite its generous 15.8% alcohol, the wine remains flamboyant and accessible, with enough structure and depth to continue evolving beautifully over time. Parker suggested a drinking window extending from 2008 to 2030, underscoring its strong aging potential.

Production
Produced from the estate’s oldest vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine is based on 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault. The grapes come from one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated terroirs, where warm conditions and old vines help deliver ripeness, depth, and natural concentration. It is aged in old barrels, a method that preserves the purity of fruit while allowing the wine to develop complexity without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a rich, powerful red that pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, braised short ribs, game, duck confit, and hearty Provençal dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now, to help the wine open fully and show its layered aromatics.
