Description

From a tiny, southwest-facing premier cru parcel in Pernand-Vergelesses, Domaine Petit-Roy’s Les Fichots 2022 captures Pinot Noir in an especially refined, understated register. This is a Burgundy for those who value finesse over power: whole-cluster fermentation, delicate extraction and a naturally low-yielding site come together in a wine that feels both quietly luxurious and deeply expressive of place. As a 1er Cru from one of the Côte de Beaune’s more discreet villages, it offers a particularly compelling balance of pedigree and nuance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Les Fichots shows a luminous ruby core with translucent edges, hinting at both concentration and elegance. The nose opens with dark cherry and redcurrant, followed by violet, cedar shavings and a gentle forest-floor note that adds an earthy, Burgundian complexity without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, the wine is poised and finely etched: juicy, precise red and black berry fruit wrapped in graceful, silky tannins. Subtle spice and cedar tones sit beneath a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity, giving the impression of lift and energy rather than weight. The finish is long, pure and quietly persistent, with floral and mineral nuances lingering. While already charming in its youth, the structure and freshness suggest very good aging potential over the next 8–12 years, during which it should gain further aromatic complexity and textural harmony.

Production
Les Fichots is a small premier cru climat on the slopes of Pernand-Vergelesses, with a southwest exposition that ensures generous afternoon light and excellent ripening conditions. The vines here grow on stony clay soils over limestone, a classic Burgundian mix that provides both concentration and a marked mineral line in the finished wine. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and sort rigorously in the vineyard and cellar. Domaine Petit-Roy vinifies this cuvée with a significant proportion of whole clusters, allowing the stems to contribute perfume, structure and complexity. Fermentation proceeds with gentle extraction—more infusion than heavy pumping over—so that the delicacy of Pinot Noir is preserved. The wine is then matured in carefully selected barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) to polish the tannins and add subtle spice, without overshadowing the purity of fruit and terroir.

Food & Serving
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Fichots is a natural partner for refined yet comforting dishes: think roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal chops, or guinea fowl with morels. It also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes, such as wild mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or a simple roast chicken with thyme and root vegetables, and can pair beautifully with semi-soft cheeses like Tomme, Reblochon or a mild Comté. Serve at 15–16°C (just cool of room temperature) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the whole-cluster and floral notes unfurl; as the wine ages, a shorter, careful decant mainly to remove any sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Domaine Petit-Roy is a rising star in Burgundy, known for meticulous, small-scale viticulture and a stylistic preference for purity, energy and terroir transparency. Working with carefully chosen parcels across the Côte, the domaine focuses on respectful farming and low-intervention winemaking, allowing each site—like the premier cru Les Fichots in Pernand-Vergelesses—to speak clearly in the glass. Although relatively young compared to many historic Burgundian estates, Petit-Roy has quickly attracted the attention of sommeliers and collectors for its fine-boned, expressive Pinot Noirs that bridge classic Burgundian character with a modern sensitivity to balance and drinkability.
