Description
Domaine Moreau-Naudet Petit Chablis 2023 is a vibrant, terroir-driven white Burgundy that delivers far more character than its humble appellation suggests. Sourced from a single three-hectare plateau vineyard between Courgis and Beines, it captures the pure, cool-fruited charm of northern Chardonnay with striking clarity. Despite spring hail in April and May, the 2023 bottling remains remarkably expressive, underlining the resilience of both site and grower.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Petit Chablis shows a pale lemon hue with green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose opens with delicate aromas of white peach, orange zest, and honeysuckle, layered over subtle chalky and saline nuances that hint at its limestone-rich soils.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely textured yet wonderfully light on its feet. Juicy stone-fruit notes mingle with citrus peel and white flowers, driven by a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything crisp and focused. The finish is clean and mineral-tinged, leaving a persistent impression of citrus and wet stone. Enjoy it now for its bright, primary fruit, but it has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 2–4 years.
Production
The fruit for this Petit Chablis comes from a single three-hectare parcel situated on a windswept plateau between Courgis and Beines, an area known for its cool climate and limestone-rich soils that impart tension and minerality to the wines. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to preserve fruit integrity, especially important in a year touched by spring hail. In the cellar, Domaine Moreau-Naudet favors a gentle, minimalist approach: the grapes are carefully pressed, the must is fermented with a focus on preserving purity and precision, and the wine is matured—primarily in stainless steel, often on fine lees—to highlight the vivid fruit and salty, Chablisien character without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Petit Chablis is made for the table, especially alongside seafood and lighter fare. Try it with freshly shucked oysters, shrimp cocktail, steamed mussels, or simply grilled white fish with lemon and herbs; it also shines with goat cheese, sushi, tempura, and bright vegetable dishes such as asparagus, fennel, or salads with citrus dressings. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its precision and freshness. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the floral and stone-fruit notes to unfold.
Producer
Domaine Moreau-Naudet is a highly regarded family estate in Chablis, known for producing wines of depth, tension, and authenticity from some of the region’s most distinctive sites. Over recent years, the domaine has gained increasing recognition for its thoughtful, terroir-focused approach and its ability to craft expressive wines across the range—from Petit Chablis to top village and premier cru bottlings. With careful vineyard work, modest yields, and a restrained hand in the cellar, Moreau-Naudet has become a reference point for modern, finely etched Chablis that still speaks clearly of its historic Burgundian roots.
