Description

Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret’s Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux 2018 showcases what happens when a great Côte de Nuits estate turns its hand to Beaune’s finest terroirs. Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, this Premier Cru marries generosity and finesse, capturing the warmth of the 2018 vintage without losing the precision that Burgundy lovers seek. It’s a supple, characterful red that sits beautifully between immediate pleasure and serious cellar potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful purple hues at the rim, reflecting the richness of the 2018 harvest. The nose is expressive and inviting, offering layers of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry, intertwined with notes of violets, rose petals, and a touch of black tea. Subtle hints of sweet spice, vanilla, and toasted oak underline the fruit without overwhelming it. On the palate, this Beaune 1er Cru is silky and medium-bodied yet confidently structured, with a core of juicy red berries, cranberry, and morello cherry. Fine, chalky tannins and fresh acidity keep the wine lively, while nuances of forest floor, dried herbs, and a faint minerality add complexity on the mid-palate and finish. The 2018 vintage brings a generous, almost velvety texture, but there is enough backbone to support 8–12 years of aging from vintage, during which the wine will develop more savory, truffle-like and earthy nuances.

Production
Les Avaux is a well-regarded Premier Cru climat on the slopes above the town of Beaune, rooted in classic Burgundian limestone and clay soils that give Pinot Noir its poise and fine-grained structure. Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, based in Vosne-Romanée, farms its parcels with a strong emphasis on respect for the environment, favoring careful vineyard work, moderate yields, and largely manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. After a rigorous sorting, the grapes are traditionally vinified: destemmed or with a proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage, followed by a cool maceration and gentle fermentations to extract color, aroma, and refined tannins rather than power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a judicious use of new oak—to add texture and complexity while preserving the purity of fruit and the identity of the Avaux terroir.

Food & Serving
This Beaune 1er Cru Avaux 2018 is a versatile food wine, particularly well suited to refined yet comforting dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (especially roast chicken or guinea fowl), duck breast, pork tenderloin, veal, and classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin or rabbit in mustard sauce. It also works well with earthy accompaniments like mushroom fricassée, truffle risotto, or root vegetables, as well as semi-soft cheeses such as Époisses, Reblochon, or aged Comté. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. For optimal enjoyment, especially in its youth, consider decanting for 30–45 minutes to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its floral and spicy nuances.

Producer
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is a respected, long-established family estate based in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of some of Burgundy’s most hallowed Pinot Noir vineyards. With roots in the region stretching back several centuries, the domaine has built its reputation on meticulous vineyard work and an almost artisanal attention to detail in the cellar. While best known for its Côte de Nuits holdings, including prestigious sites in Vosne-Romanée and surrounding villages, the estate also produces noteworthy wines from select terroirs in the Côte de Beaune, such as Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux, bringing its signature elegance and precision to a broader Burgundian canvas. Mongeard-Mugneret’s wines are sought after by enthusiasts and collectors for their combination of typicity, longevity, and a clear expression of place.

Great wine from a high level producer, for a great price and with a little bit of age. I wouldn't sleep on this. Darker, richer style of pinot noir. 40 % new oak, now well integrated.
