Description
Marjan Simčič Merlot Cru Selection Brda 2020 is a refined, single-varietal Merlot from one of Slovenia’s most respected contemporary winemakers. Crafted from carefully selected parcels in the rolling hills of Brda, it offers a polished, modern expression of Merlot that still speaks clearly of its place of origin. This cuvée forms part of Simčič’s acclaimed Cru Selection range, wines known for their precision, depth and age-worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Merlot shows a deep ruby color with a vibrant, almost garnet edge, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe black cherry and plum interweave with notes of wild berries, graphite, dried herbs, and a touch of cocoa and vanilla from skillful oak maturation. Subtle hints of tobacco leaf, sweet spice and forest floor emerge with a bit of air, adding complexity and intrigue.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a finely tuned balance between ripe fruit, lively acidity and firm yet polished tannins. Dark cherry, blackberry and plum sit at the core, supported by savory nuances of cedar, licorice, cocoa nibs and dried Mediterranean herbs. The texture is silky but structured, leading into a long, persistent finish with a gentle mineral edge that reflects the hillside vineyards of Brda. Enjoyable now with a bit of aeration, this 2020 has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years in a good cellar, gaining tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried fruit over time.
Production
The grapes for Marjan Simčič Merlot Cru Selection Brda 2020 are sourced from selected hillside vineyards in Goriška Brda, a border region between Slovenia and Italy known for its sun-drenched slopes, cool nights and mixed marl and sandstone soils (known locally as “opoka”). These conditions encourage slow ripening, excellent phenolic maturity and a distinct mineral backbone in the wines. Vineyard work is carried out with great care, often following organic or low-intervention principles, with meticulous green harvesting and hand-picking at optimal ripeness to ensure only the best clusters reach the winery. After gentle destemming, the must typically undergoes a temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in quality oak barrels (often a mix of barrique and larger formats) for an extended period, allowing the Merlot to develop depth, integrate its tannins and take on subtle spice and toast nuances while preserving freshness and varietal purity.
Food & Serving
This Merlot is a natural partner for hearty, flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as ribeye, lamb chops or beef tenderloin, as well as slow-braised dishes like beef short ribs or osso buco. Game birds, mushroom risotto, truffle pasta and aged hard cheeses also make excellent companions, highlighting the wine’s savory complexity. Serve at 16–18°C to best showcase its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic range and silky texture.
Producer
The Simčič family has been cultivating vines in Brda for generations, but it is under the guidance of Marjan Simčič that the estate has gained an international reputation for its precise, terroir-driven wines. Located in the Goriška Brda region of western Slovenia, near the Italian border, the winery bridges Central European tradition with a contemporary, quality-focused philosophy. Marjan is regarded as one of Slovenia’s leading winemakers, known for his meticulous vineyard work, low yields and an approach that emphasizes authenticity and minimal intervention. His Cru Selection range, including this Merlot, showcases the unique potential of Brda’s best sites and has contributed significantly to putting Slovenian premium wine on the global map, with consistent praise from critics and sommeliers alike.
