Description
Lucien le Moine’s Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2008 is a highly individual Bourgogne Pinot Noir, sourced from one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most revered sites and shaped by the meticulous hands of Rotem and Mounir Saouma. Known for its precision, depth, and unfiltered Grand Cru character, it captures both the elegance of the vineyard and the producer’s uncompromising style. The 2008 vintage has developed into a serious, ageworthy wine with notable critical acclaim and cellar potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Clos Saint-Denis typically shows a deep yet translucent ruby hue, with the kind of polished brightness expected of top-tier Pinot Noir from Burgundy. The nose is strikingly complex, offering notes of iris, nutmeg, blackberry, red currant, and savory nuances of rare beef jus, toasted pecan, and crushed stone.
The palate is silken and layered, balancing sweet, ripe fruit with lifted acidity and a deeply savory, almost feral complexity. It has both sensual texture and mineral drive, finishing long, resonant, and mouthwatering. With time in bottle, the wine should continue to evolve gracefully, and the 2008 vintage has the structure to reward extended cellaring over many years.
Production
Clos Saint-Denis is one of the legendary Grand Cru vineyards of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits, where old limestone-rich soils and a cool Burgundian climate help Pinot Noir express finesse, perfume, and minerality. Lucien le Moine works with carefully selected top parcels, and the approach is deliberately hands-on from vineyard selection through to final bottling. The wine is aged on its lees in new Burgundy oak barrels, with late malolactic fermentation and manual racking and bottling without filtration to preserve texture, detail, and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, game birds, veal loin, or mushroom-based cuisine, especially when truffle, morels, or rich jus are involved. Serve at around 16–18°C to allow the aromatics and structure to unfold fully. Decanting for about 1 to 2 hours is recommended if drinking young, though longer bottle age may reduce the need for decanting.
Producer
Lucien le Moine is the Bourgogne label founded in 1999 by Rotem and Mounir Saouma, a pair celebrated for their exacting standards and innovative approach. Based in Beaune, they built their reputation by sourcing small quantities of exceptional Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines and élevaging them in their own cellar with minimal intervention. The estate has become one of the most admired modern names in Burgundy, known for producing deeply expressive wines that consistently attract strong critical praise.
