Description

Lucien le Moine’s Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2005 is a striking expression of old-school Burgundy made with a fiercely hands-on philosophy. Sourced from one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most celebrated grand cru vineyards, it reflects both the depth of this exceptional site and the meticulous, low-intervention approach that has made Lucien le Moine a cult name among Burgundy lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2005 shows the polish and presence expected of a great Grand Cru, with a luminous, deeply colored Pinot Noir profile. The bouquet is crystalline and precise, unfolding with maraschino cherry, fresh raspberry, orange sorbet, and a cool stony nuance that gives the wine lift and definition. The palate is remarkably harmonious, combining intensity with freshness, vitality, and exceptional clarity. There is fine-grained structure beneath the fruit, and the finish is long, poised, and lingering. Still very much in its youth for a Grand Cru, it has the concentration and balance to age beautifully for many years, while also showing well with generous aeration now.

Production
Clos de la Roche is one of the most respected Grand Cru sites in Burgundy, prized for its mineral-driven intensity and structured, ageworthy Pinot Noir. Lucien le Moine works with carefully selected top parcels and vinifies the wine in Beaune, using a highly artisanal approach: whole, hand-managed élevage on fine lees, maturation in new Burgundy oak, late malolactic fermentation, and bottling directly from barrel without filtration to preserve purity and texture.

Food & Serving
This wine is best served with elegant dishes that match its depth without overpowering its finesse, such as roast duck, pigeon, game birds, veal, or mushroom-based dishes. Decant generously if opening now—several hours is ideal—and serve at around 16–18°C. A younger bottle like this benefits greatly from aeration, which helps reveal its aromatics and soften the structure.

Producer
Lucien le Moine was founded in 1999 by Rotem and Mounir Saouma, and has since become one of the most talked-about producers in Burgundy. Known for their uncompromising standards and innovative cellar work, the pair built a reputation by focusing exclusively on top-quality 1er Cru and Grand Cru wines from carefully chosen growers. Their meticulous methods and consistent critical acclaim have made Lucien le Moine a benchmark for intense, expressive, and highly collectible Burgundy.
