In the glass, Le Gamay 2023 shows a vibrant, translucent ruby hue with a youthful purple rim, signaling its freshness and energy. The nose is lifted and inviting: notes of fresh cherry, redcurrant, and candied red fruit are laced with a light peppery edge and a touch of floral charm, giving it both immediacy and a hint of complexity. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied, juicy, and wonderfully drinkable, with crunchy red fruit at its core—think ripe cherries and wild strawberries—backed by a subtle spice and a whisper of dried herbs. The Gamay for this cuvée is grown on sandy-loam soils in the Loire, a terroir that naturally favors light, aromatic reds with supple texture and vibrant acidity. The well-drained sands encourage early ripening and express Gamay’s bright, red-fruited side, while the loam adds a touch of softness and roundness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only healthy, ripe bunches make it into the cellar. In keeping with the wine’s fresh profile, the fruit undergoes a short, cool maceration, limiting extraction to preserve delicacy and avoid harsh tannins. Fermentation is carried out at controlled, low temperatures to capture aromatics, and the wine is then matured briefly in inert vessels (such as stainless steel or concrete) rather than new oak, allowing the pure, juicy character of Gamay and its Loire origins to shine through.
