Domaine Leflaive’s Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon 2014 is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the estate’s signature vineyards. Sourced from a large and highly prized Premier Cru parcel, it offers the precision, depth, and clarity that have made Clavoillon one of the most dependable expressions in Puligny-Montrachet.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright, luminous pale gold in the glass. Aromatically, it opens with ripe lemon, white flowers, green apple, and a subtle spice from gentle oak, all lifted by a distinct mineral edge that recalls wet stones and chalky earth.
On the palate, it is poised and focused, with an appealing balance of freshness and texture. Citrus and stone fruit lead the way before the wine broadens into a creamy, almost silky mouthfeel, layered with nutty nuances and a hint of smoky minerality. Vibrant acidity carries the finish, which is long, precise, and marked by a clean chalky, lightly saline impression. It is best enjoyed with 5–10 years of bottle age, when its complexity continues to unfold.
Production
Clavoillon comes from a major Premier Cru site in Puligny-Montrachet, where chalky soils and a cool Burgundy climate help preserve freshness while building aromatic detail and mineral tension. Domaine Leflaive’s significant holdings in the vineyard allow for a strong, site-driven expression with remarkable consistency.
The grapes are typically harvested by hand and vinified with a careful, restrained approach designed to highlight terroir. Gentle pressing, controlled fermentation, and measured oak aging contribute to the wine’s balance of purity, texture, and subtle complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with fish, shellfish, and delicate poultry dishes, especially when served with a classic beurre blanc sauce. It is best served cool, around 10–12°C, and while decanting is not essential, a brief aeration can help the wine open up in its youth.
Producer
Domaine Leflaive is one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine estates, with a long history of excellence in Puligny-Montrachet. The domaine has played a major role in defining the reputation of Montrachet and its surrounding Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, and is widely recognized for producing some of the most sought-after Chardonnay wines in the world.
