Description

Domaine Joseph Colin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2023 is a precise, mineral-driven white Burgundy from one of Puligny’s higher, wind-swept premier cru sites. Crafted in tiny quantities, it showcases Joseph Colin’s signature style: tension, finesse and crystalline purity of fruit. La Garenne has long been admired for its airy elegance and chiselled structure, and in 2023 it delivers a wonderfully vibrant expression of Chardonnay with a clear sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine is a pale, luminous straw-yellow with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is focused and refined, opening with white flowers, lemon zest and crushed oyster shell, followed by notes of green apple, pear, chalk dust and a subtle touch of hazelnut and fresh butter as it starts to unfurl in the glass. On the palate, it is taut and linear at first, with a mouth-watering citrus core—think yuzu and Meyer lemon—wrapped in ripe stone fruit and cool orchard fruit. A pronounced, saline minerality runs through the mid-palate, giving the wine lift and length, while discreet oak brings gentle spice and texture rather than weight. The finish is long, pure and precise, with lingering notes of citrus pith, chalk and a hint of toasted almond. While already approachable with a brief aeration, this 2023 has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 8–12 years, developing more complexity, nutty nuances and honeyed depth over time.

Production
La Garenne is a high-lying premier cru on the Puligny-Montrachet slope, characterised by thin, stony limestone soils over hard rock, excellent drainage and a relatively cool, breezy exposition—ideal for producing wines of tension and minerality. Yields are kept low and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe Chardonnay grapes are selected. In the cellar, Joseph Colin follows a minimalist, terroir-first philosophy: gentle whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts and élevage in French oak barrels, with a restrained proportion of new oak to preserve purity. The wine typically rests on fine lees, with limited bâtonnage, allowing texture and complexity to build while keeping the profile tight, energetic and transparent to its origin.

Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne is superb with refined seafood and white meat dishes: think oysters, scallops in a light beurre blanc, lobster, turbot, sole meunière, roasted chicken with morel cream, or veal in a delicate jus. It also pairs beautifully with fine goat’s cheeses and subtly truffled dishes, where its acidity and minerality cut through richness. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express without losing tension. For optimal enjoyment, especially in its youth, consider decanting for 30–45 minutes or giving it a generous swirl in large Burgundy stems to help the layered nose and palate open up.

Producer
Domaine Joseph Colin is one of the most exciting names in contemporary white Burgundy, rooted in the prestigious Colin family of Saint-Aubin. After working at the renowned family estate Domaine Marc Colin, Joseph established his own domaine in 2017, quickly earning a reputation for incisive, terroir-driven Chardonnays from Saint-Aubin, Chassagne- and Puligny-Montrachet. His approach focuses on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a light touch in the cellar, highlighting the character of each individual climat. Today, the domaine is regarded as a rising star of the Côte de Beaune, with wines that are prized for their energy, precision and ageworthy elegance.
