Description

Domaine Joseph Colin’s Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2021 is a precise, finely etched expression of white Burgundy from one of the appellation’s most coveted premier cru sites. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay, it combines mineral tension with layered citrus and stone-fruit character, capturing the elegance of a cooler, classically styled vintage. Les Caillerets has long been regarded as a benchmark terroir in Chassagne, and in the hands of Joseph Colin it delivers a wine of purity, finesse, and notable aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets shows a pale straw to light gold hue with green reflections, hinting at both its youth and freshness. The nose is finely detailed and restrained at first, opening with notes of lemon zest, white flowers, and green apple, followed by layers of ripe pear, subtle stone fruits, and a flinty, chalky minerality. Gentle accents of toasted hazelnut and baking spice from judicious oak aging add complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural brightness. On the palate, the wine is taut and crystalline, with a vibrant core of citrus and orchard fruit framed by a firm, stony backbone. The texture is both silky and energetic, balancing precision with a touch of creaminess on the mid-palate. A long, saline finish carries notes of crushed rock, citrus peel, and a hint of brioche, suggesting impressive depth beneath the wine’s refined profile. Enjoyable now with aeration, this 2021 has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed, and savory complexity with time in bottle.

Production
Les Caillerets is one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s most prized premier crus, known for its thin, stony soils rich in limestone and small stones (or “cailloux”) that drain well and naturally restrict yields, concentrating flavor and minerality. The climate here favors slow, even ripening, allowing Chardonnay to develop aromatic complexity while retaining fresh acidity. At Domaine Joseph Colin, the fruit is typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve delicacy and avoid oxidation. In the cellar, grapes are gently pressed and the must is settled before fermentation, which takes place in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new but used judiciously to support rather than dominate the wine’s character. Aging on fine lees for several months adds texture and nuance, with minimal intervention and careful use of sulfites to maintain purity, precision, and a clear expression of terroir.

Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets 2021 shines alongside refined dishes where texture and subtlety matter most. Ideal pairings include butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with a beurre blanc, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a light cream sauce. It also works beautifully with richer seafood pastas, fine sushi or sashimi, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve slightly chilled at around 11–13°C (52–55°F) to allow both its freshness and complexity to unfold. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a generous swirl in large Burgundy stems to fully reveal the wine’s aromatic layers and mineral core.

Producer
Domaine Joseph Colin is a rising star in Burgundy, born from one of the region’s most respected wine families. After working within the renowned Colin-Deleger estate, Joseph established his own domaine, focusing on small, meticulously farmed parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, and surrounding villages. His style emphasizes precision, purity, and transparency of terroir, making him one of the most closely watched producers in the Côte de Beaune. Combining traditional Burgundian know-how with a thoughtful, minimalist approach in the cellar, Domaine Joseph Colin has quickly gained a reputation for crafting incisive, mineral-driven whites that faithfully reflect their origins and stand among the most exciting contemporary expressions of the region.
