Description

Domaine Jonsier Lirac Rouge Les Muses 2017 is a characterful Southern Rhône red that brings together Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah in a generous, finely structured blend. Sourced from the Lirac appellation on the right bank of the Rhône, it captures the warmth of the Mediterranean climate while retaining a refined sense of balance and freshness. This cuvée “Les Muses” nods to the region’s long heritage of Rhône blends, offering a serious yet approachable red that’s ideal for both hearty meals and thoughtful sipping.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Muses 2017 shows a deep ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, reflecting a few years of bottle age. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe black cherries, macerated strawberries and plum, intertwined with notes of dried herbs, garrigue, black pepper, licorice and a subtle hint of smoked meat and cocoa. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with a generous, velvety texture. Grenache brings juicy red fruit and warmth, Mourvèdre adds darker fruit and a savory, spicy edge, while Syrah contributes structure and a touch of violet and peppery lift. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, giving a firm yet polished frame to the fruit, and the finish is long with lingering notes of spice, dried thyme and dark berries. Drinking beautifully now, the 2017 still has the structure to evolve for a few more years in bottle, gaining further complexity over the next 3–5 years under good cellar conditions.

Production
Domaine Jonsier sources the fruit for Les Muses from Lirac’s characteristic stony terraces and clay-limestone soils, which store heat during the day and release it at night, helping the grapes to ripen fully while preserving aromatic freshness. Vines are typically tended with close attention to yield and fruit quality, and the grapes are harvested at optimal maturity to capture depth of flavor and balanced acidity. In the cellar, the varieties are traditionally vinified, often with careful destemming and temperature-controlled fermentation to protect fruit purity and extract fine tannins rather than harshness. The wine is then matured, partly in vats and potentially in older barrels, to integrate its components and soften the structure without overwhelming the natural expression of the blend or the Lirac terroir.

Food & Serving
This Lirac Rouge is a natural partner for robust, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Think grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-cooked beef daube, duck confit, or herb-crusted pork, as well as rustic dishes like cassoulet, ratatouille, or wood-fired pizzas with cured meats. It also pairs nicely with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range. If opened in its youth or for more structure-driven palates, decanting for 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up and soften the tannins, revealing the full spice and garrigue character typical of Southern Rhône reds.

Producer
Domaine Jonsier is a quality-focused producer in the Rhône Valley, crafting wines that showcase the character and diversity of the region’s appellations, including Lirac. Working within one of the Rhône’s oldest winegrowing areas on the right bank of the river, the domaine emphasizes careful vineyard work and traditional Rhône blending to create wines with both regional authenticity and individual charm. While relatively modest in size, Domaine Jonsier has earned a solid reputation among enthusiasts for delivering well-crafted, terroir-driven wines that offer excellent value and a clear expression of Southern Rhône personality.
