Description
From the heart of Vosne-Romanée, this 2018 red wine from Domaine d'Eugénie captures the finesse and quiet power that have made this village legendary among Burgundy lovers. Elegant yet concentrated, it offers a beautifully detailed expression of Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most prized addresses. With its limited production and precise winemaking, this is a bottle for those who appreciate nuance, texture and Burgundy’s unmistakable sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant, medium ruby hue with a youthful brightness at the rim. The nose is immediately inviting, opening with sweet red berries and ripe plums, layered with subtle smoke, peony florals and a touch of earth and spice that is very true to Vosne-Romanée. Hints of crushed stone and a gentle herbal lift add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet quite full of flavor – supple, fleshy and finely woven. Juicy red cherry and plum fruit sit over a cool, fresh core, with a lively line of acidity that keeps everything focused and energetic. Silky tannins frame the wine without ever feeling harsh, leading into a long, saline-inflected finish that brings back notes of red fruit, spice and a faint smokiness. Enjoyable now with a bit of air, it has solid aging potential; stored well, it should evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances of forest floor and truffle.
Production
Domaine d'Eugénie’s Vosne-Romanée comes from carefully tended parcels on classic Burgundian limestone-clay soils, which lend both finesse and underlying structure to the wine. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only pristine fruit. Vinification typically involves gentle handling: partial or total destemming depending on the vintage character, a cool pre-fermentation maceration to capture delicate aromatics, and fermentation in small vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of the Vosne terroir.
Food & Serving
This Vosne-Romanée is wonderfully versatile at the table, pairing particularly well with dishes that mirror its elegance rather than overpower it. Think roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal with morels, or simple but perfectly roasted chicken. It also shines alongside mushroom dishes, truffled pastas and mild, creamy cheeses like Brillat-Savarin or a well-aged Comté. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and silkiness. For current drinking, decanting for 30–60 minutes helps the wine unfurl its floral and spicy nuances; older bottles should be handled gently and given a shorter, careful decant if needed to separate them from any sediment.
Producer
Domaine d'Eugénie is a respected address in Vosne-Romanée, rooted in some of Burgundy’s most coveted terroirs. Established in the 21st century on the former holdings of a historic domaine, it quickly attracted attention for its meticulous viticulture and refined, terroir-driven wines. The estate’s focus is on low yields, careful handwork in the vineyards and a sensitive, non-interventionist approach in the cellar, which together allow each appellation to speak clearly of its origin. Within the Côte de Nuits, Domaine d'Eugénie has become known for Pinot Noirs that balance intensity with precision, and its limited-production Vosne-Romanée bottlings are particularly sought after by collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts alike.
