Description

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron’s Romanée-Saint-Vivant 2018 in magnum format is a remarkable expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated Grand Cru sites. Crafted from Pinot Noir with the domaine’s signature focus on purity, precision, and finesse, it combines aromatic complexity with poised structure and exceptional depth. The estate’s long history, dating back to 1926, adds further prestige to a wine already among the finest examples of the appellation.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with a beautifully defined bouquet of dark berry fruit—blackberry, boysenberry, and blueberry—lifted by crushed violet petals, aniseed, and subtle chalky nuances. Its colour is typically deep and luminous, hinting at the concentration within while retaining the elegance expected of great Burgundy. On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet impressively layered, with very fine tannins, perfectly balanced acidity, and a smooth, glossy texture. Bramble, black cherry, stylish oak, and a touch of reduction build towards a long, refined finish. This is a wine with the structure to age gracefully for many years, gaining further nuance and savoury complexity over time.

Production
This 0.5-hectare parcel, planted in 1926, sits on limestone-rich soils with patches of clay in the Côte de Nuits, contributing to the wine’s tension, finesse, and floral complexity. The domaine harvests relatively early to preserve freshness and precision, with modest yields that typically average 28–30 hl/ha. Vinification is carried out with great care, including the use of 100% new French oak and filtration only at bottling, while the estate farms organically, ploughs with horse power, and follows the lunar cycle in the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as duck breast, roast pigeon, venison, game birds, truffled mushroom risotto, or lamb with herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 1–2 hours if enjoying it young, especially in magnum format, to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.

Producer
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron was founded in 1926 and is based in the southern part of the Côte de Nuits, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Long regarded as one of Burgundy’s top producers, the domaine has undergone a notable renaissance under Sophie Meunier and her husband Alain, with their son Louis now increasingly taking over winemaking duties. Known for its uncompromising pursuit of quality, the estate is celebrated for wines of depth, floral detail, and impressive precision.
