Description
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron’s Clos de Vougeot 2018 is a finely crafted Grand Cru Burgundy from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most respected estates. Made from Pinot Noir and sourced from two prized parcels in the upper part of Clos de Vougeot, it combines depth, perfume, and precision with the structure to age beautifully.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a healthy dark ruby-red color with an inky core. The nose opens with black cherry, liquorice, spice, and a lifted violet note, while the palate is tight and focused at first, then gradually becomes more supple and expansive. Dark fruit, mineral tones, and a subtle chalky edge give the wine both intensity and elegance, while firm tannins suggest it will gain further flesh and complexity with time in bottle.
This is a serious, backward young Clos de Vougeot that is built for patience. The late malolactic fermentation and generous use of new oak currently keep the wine reserved, but they also point to a long aging window, where its floral lift, savory depth, and layered texture should continue to develop over many years.
Production
The wine comes from 0.5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyard in the upper section of Clos de Vougeot, where limestone-rich soils with some clay help give the wine its distinctive combination of freshness, structure, and mineral definition. The estate works organically, follows the lunar cycle, and ploughs with horse power, reflecting a hands-on approach that respects the vineyard’s character. Vines average around 30 years of age, yields are kept low at roughly 28–30 hl/ha, and the grapes are harvested relatively early to preserve purity and tension. Vinification is traditional and precise, with maturation in 100% new French oak and no filtration until bottling.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir is best enjoyed with refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, venison, lamb saddle, or beef fillet with a mushroom sauce. It also pairs beautifully with earthy ingredients like truffle, morel mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, as this will help soften the structure and reveal more of the wine’s perfume and fruit.
Producer
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron was founded in 1926 and has become one of Burgundy’s standout producers, with a particular reputation for producing deep, finely structured wines from the Côte de Nuits. The modern reputation of the domaine was strengthened under Sophie Meunier and her husband Alain Meunier, who helped drive a notable renaissance in quality, and the next generation, including Louis, has continued that progress with careful refinements in the cellar. Known for its organic farming, low yields, and uncompromising commitment to quality, the domaine is widely regarded as one of the region’s benchmark estates.
