Description
Domaine Jean Grivot Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2009 is a superbly terroir-driven expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated vineyards. Sourced from old, densely planted Pinot Noir parcels in the historic Clos de Vougeot, it combines depth, precision, and unmistakable grand cru character with the meticulous craftsmanship for which the Grivot family is known.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, vivid ruby hue with a polished, elegant sheen. The nose is layered and refined, opening with red forest berries, cherry, and raspberry, alongside floral nuances, subtle herbs, and gentle spice from oak ageing; with time, earthy notes of woodland, mineral tones, and a faint smoky edge emerge.
On the palate, the wine is structured and concentrated, yet beautifully poised. Bright acidity lifts the rich core of fruit, while the tannins are fine-grained, firm, and seamlessly integrated. The oak is well judged, adding hints of vanilla, toast, and warm spice without masking the fruit. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential, and it should gain further complexity, tertiary depth, and a more layered, savory elegance over time.
Production
The wine comes from 1.86 hectares of contiguous holdings in the mid-slope section of Clos de Vougeot, where the soils form a complex mosaic of limestone, clay, and alluvial deposits. This site benefits from a distinctive microclimate and old, closely planted vines, both of which contribute to concentration, balance, and aromatic depth. Vinification is carried out in a style that emphasizes clarity of fruit and vineyard expression, with ageing in oak barrels, including a notable proportion of new oak, to support structure and finesse.
Food & Serving
This grand cru Pinot Noir is best enjoyed with refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, quail, lamb, or beef tenderloin, as well as mushroom-based preparations and truffled cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes when young to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
