Description

Domaine Jean Claude Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2003 is a beautifully evolved white Burgundy that combines the richness of a warm vintage with the precision and lift that define great Grand Cru Chardonnay. From one of the most celebrated names in Burgundy, this is a wine of depth, finesse, and unmistakable class.

Tasting Notes
Now showing a golden hue with the mature sheen expected of a two-decade-old Grand Cru, the wine offers a layered and expressive nose of buttered apples, lemon oil, toasted nuts, and subtle spice. Despite its age, it still feels vibrant and focused rather than heavy or tired. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with a concentrated core, dense mineral structure, and a silky texture that carries the fruit through to a long, precise finish. Notes of citrus, saline, and gentle nuttiness linger beautifully, while the balanced acidity suggests it remains poised and energetic. It has excellent drinking appeal now, though the best bottles can continue to hold gracefully for a little longer.

Production
Bâtard-Montrachet is one of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grand Cru sites, known for producing Chardonnay of exceptional power, texture, and mineral complexity. The vineyard’s limestone-rich soils and ideal exposure help create wines with both richness and tension, and the warm 2003 vintage brought added generosity to the fruit while Ramonet’s disciplined approach preserved structure and balance. Vinification at Domaine Jean Claude Ramonet is traditionally focused on careful harvesting, restrained cellar handling, and élevage that emphasizes purity, depth, and ageworthiness.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for refined dishes such as lobster, turbot, scallops, roast chicken with cream sauce, or mushroom risotto. Serve at around 11–13°C to let the aromatics and texture unfold fully. Decanting is optional, but a gentle decant of 20–30 minutes can help open the wine if it has been recently unsettled or if you want to showcase its mature complexity sooner.

Producer
Domaine Jean Claude Ramonet is one of the iconic estates of Burgundy, particularly admired for its outstanding white wines from Chassagne-Montrachet and the surrounding Grand Cru vineyards. Built on a reputation for precision, longevity, and terroir expression, the domaine has long been considered a benchmark producer for Chardonnay in the region. Its wines are highly sought after by collectors and are frequently praised for their ability to combine power with remarkable elegance and aging potential.
