Description
Domaine Jamet’s Condrieu Vernillon 2021 captures the pure, aromatic charm of Viognier from some of the Northern Rhône’s most revered hillsides. This is an elegant, medium to full-bodied Condrieu that leans toward freshness and definition rather than opulence, delivering beautiful fruit with a lively, mouthwatering finish. It’s a limited, terroir-driven white that showcases why Condrieu remains one of France’s most distinctive and sought-after appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Condrieu Vernillon shows a luminous pale gold color with subtle green highlights. The nose is immediately expressive, with pronounced floral notes—think jasmine and white blossom—wrapped around ripe melon, pear, and a hint of white gumdrop sweetness.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet finely balanced, offering generous stone and orchard fruits without ever feeling heavy. Ripe melon and pear are lifted by bright acidity, giving the wine a clean, refreshing line and an almost crystalline precision. The finish is reasonably crisp and lively, with lingering florals and a delicate, candied nuance. While already approachable and delicious now, this vintage should drink well for several years, gaining a bit more texture and complexity over 3–5 years in bottle.
Production
Condrieu Vernillon is sourced from steep, terraced vineyards in the Condrieu appellation of the Northern Rhône, where Viognier thrives on poor, granitic soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The region’s continental climate, with warm days and cooler nights, helps to preserve aromatics and freshness in this naturally rich grape. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the dramatic slopes, allowing for careful selection of fully ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, Domaine Jamet favors a sensitive, minimally interventionist approach: gentle pressing, controlled fermentation, and an élevage that may include a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak to develop texture and complexity without overshadowing the purity of fruit or the floral character of Viognier.
Food & Serving
This Condrieu is a superb companion to refined, aromatic dishes: try it with seared scallops, lobster with butter and citrus, poached turbot, or rich shellfish risottos. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken in cream sauce, veal in light jus, or soft, bloomy cheeses like brie and triple-cream styles. For a more adventurous match, serve it alongside mildly spiced Asian dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass, or coconut. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up aromatically if served young.
Producer
Domaine Jamet is one of the star names of the Northern Rhône, historically celebrated for its benchmark Côte-Rôtie and unwavering commitment to traditional, terroir-driven winemaking. Based in the village of Ampuis, the estate has long championed the region’s steep, hard-to-farm slopes and old vines, earning a reputation for authenticity and precision. Their move into Condrieu with cuvées such as Vernillon reflects the domaine’s deep understanding of the Rhône’s great terroirs and its ability to translate them into wines of character and finesse. Today, Domaine Jamet is widely regarded as a reference producer in the area, with a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers who prize the purity, energy, and ageworthiness of its wines.
