Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy’s Santenay Clos des Hâtes 2022 is a graceful red Burgundy that captures the livelier, more approachable side of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir. This is a medium-bodied, supple wine with a charming core of ripe fruit and refined structure, ideal for those who appreciate elegance over sheer power. Sourced from the Clos des Hâtes lieu-dit in Santenay, it reflects a long local tradition of crafting characterful yet accessible Burgundies.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Santenay Clos des Hâtes shows a bright, translucent ruby hue, hinting at its delicacy and freshness. The nose opens with inviting aromas of juicy plum and wild strawberry, followed by subtle notes of baking spice, dried rose petals, and a touch of earth.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and vibrant, with a sweet-edged core of red and dark berries wrapped in fine, powdery tannins. The fruit is pure and lively, supported by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lifted and precise. Spiced red cherry, plum skin, and a whisper of forest floor linger on the finish. While already very approachable in its youth, this 2022 should evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining further complexity and softness.
Production
Clos des Hâtes lies on the rolling hills of Santenay in the southern Côte de Beaune, where limestone-rich soils mixed with clay bring both finesse and a touch of structure to Pinot Noir. The vineyard benefits from good drainage and moderate slopes, helping to achieve even ripening while preserving freshness in warmer vintages such as 2022. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and gentle handling of the fruit. In the cellar, Domaine Hubert Lamy is known for a precision-focused, artisanal approach: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentation, and élevage in French oak barrels (with a discreet use of new oak) to respect the purity of the fruit and the character of the site. The result is a wine that is finely textured, expressive, and true to its terroir.
Food & Serving
This Santenay pairs beautifully with dishes that mirror its delicacy and brightness: roast chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherry or plum sauce, pork tenderloin, or earthy mushroom dishes such as a wild mushroom risotto. It also works well with lighter game birds, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses like Reblochon or Tomme. Serve at around 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. A short decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up its red fruit and spice notes, especially in its first few years.
Producer
Domaine Hubert Lamy, based in Saint-Aubin, is one of the reference estates of the southern Côte de Beaune, especially admired for its detailed, terroir-driven whites and increasingly for its refined reds. The Lamy family has been cultivating vines in Burgundy since the 17th century, but it was Hubert Lamy who significantly expanded and modernized the domaine, with the next generation further honing quality and precision. Their meticulously farmed vineyards in Saint-Aubin, Santenay, and neighboring appellations, combined with a minimalist, site-expressive approach in the cellar, have earned the domaine a strong following among Burgundy enthusiasts and a reputation for wines that overdeliver in finesse and character for their appellation.
