Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay Clos des Hâtes 2021 is a finely chiselled expression of red Burgundy from a single, well-situated climat on the southern Côte de Beaune. Crafted predominantly from Pinot Noir, it offers a more serious, structured profile than many Santenay wines, rewarding those willing to give it a little time in the cellar. From a domaine better known for its stellar whites in Saint-Aubin, this cuvée shows just how nuanced and characterful Lamy’s reds can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos des Hâtes shows a vibrant, medium ruby hue with a youthful brightness at the rim. The nose opens with elegant yet vivid aromas of ripe plum and red raspberry, lifted by notes of blood orange zest, cinnamon, and a subtle floral edge that suggests rose petals and peony. A touch of spice and earth lingers in the background, adding depth and complexity.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied for Santenay, with impressive depth and a finely structured frame. Juicy red and dark berry fruit is supported by those “powdery,” textural tannins that wrap the fruit rather than dominate it, giving the wine both grip and finesse. A line of fresh acidity keeps everything lively and precise, leading to a persistent, gently spicy finish. While approachable with aeration, the 2021 Clos des Hâtes clearly has the backbone to improve with a few years in bottle, evolving greater silkiness and complexity over 5–10 years.
Production
Clos des Hâtes is a well-exposed site in Santenay, rooted in classic Burgundy soils of limestone and clay that favour Pinot Noir with fine tannins and aromatic lift. Domaine Hubert Lamy farms its parcels with great care, placing emphasis on low yields, careful canopy management and manual work in the vineyards to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy fruit, particularly important in a cooler, more classical vintage like 2021. Grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted before fermentation. In the cellar, Lamy typically uses gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than power, with fermentation in vat followed by maturation in French oak barrels (only a modest proportion new) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Santenay is a versatile gastronomic partner, particularly well suited to dishes with earthy and savoury dimensions. Try it with roast chicken or guinea fowl, duck breast with cherries or orange, veal chop, or herb-crusted pork. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes—such as a morel or porcini risotto—and with semi-soft cheeses like Comté or Tomme. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–60°F) to highlight its aromatic freshness and fine tannins. A short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the fruit and spice notes to fully unfurl; as it matures, a simple double decant before service will be sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Hubert Lamy is one of the reference estates of the Côte de Beaune, particularly revered for its white wines from Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. Founded in the mid-20th century and significantly elevated under Hubert Lamy and, more recently, his son Olivier, the domaine has earned acclaim for meticulous vineyard work, low-intervention winemaking and an unwavering focus on expressing individual terroirs. While its whites often steal the limelight, the estate’s red Burgundies from appellations like Santenay demonstrate the same precision and tension, making Lamy a sought-after name for collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts looking for characterful, terroir-driven wines with a strong sense of place.
