Description

Domaine Gramenon Poignée de Raisins Côtes du Rhône Rouge Bio 2021 is anything but the modest “handful of grapes” its name suggests. This certified organic Grenache from the northwestern corner of the southern Rhône delivers a generous, mouth‑filling style that’s both pure and energetic. Sourced from higher‑altitude parcels on the Gramenon plateau, it captures the estate’s hallmark of vibrant fruit, minimal intervention and a strong sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a bright, vivid ruby to garnet hue with youthful purple highlights, reflecting its lively, fruit‑driven personality. The nose opens with an immediate rush of ripe red berries—think crushed raspberries, wild strawberries and red cherries—layered with hints of pomegranate, dried herbs, a touch of white pepper and a subtle floral lift. On the palate, Poignée de Raisins is juicy and supple, with a silky texture that wraps around fine, gently grippy tannins. Flavors of red currant, raspberry coulis and cherry are underpinned by a stony, almost saline freshness from the sandstone and shell‑rich soils. The finish is clean and precise, with vibrant acidity that keeps the wine effortlessly drinkable while still offering depth and structure. This is a wine meant to be enjoyed in its youth for maximum fruit and energy, but it can comfortably evolve over 3–5 years, gaining a bit more spice and savory nuance.

Production
The grapes for Poignée de Raisins come from relatively young Grenache vines, aged roughly 4 to 30 years, rooted on sandstone and ancient marine shell sands deposited some 12 million years ago around Montbrison‑sur‑Lez. At about 350 meters altitude, the Gramenon plateau offers cooler nights and excellent natural balance in the fruit. Harvesting is done by hand with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure healthy, ripe bunches. The fruit is partially destemmed and then fermented with indigenous yeasts in unlined concrete tanks, preserving purity and texture. A maceration of around 15 days extracts color and flavor without excessive tannin. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is minimally sulfured and rests for about six months in concrete before bottling, keeping intervention low and the expression of terroir front and center.

Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile food wine, ideal with charcuterie boards, grilled sausages, roast chicken, burgers, or simple dishes like pasta with tomato and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean flavors—ratatouille, lamb chops with rosemary, or grilled vegetables with olive oil and garlic. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight its freshness and bright fruit. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 20–30 minute aeration can help the aromas open up, especially in the first year or two after release.

Producer
Domaine Gramenon, founded in the late 1970s in Montbrison‑sur‑Lez, has become one of the benchmark estates of the southern Rhône for organic and low‑intervention wines. Working at higher elevations on the Gramenon plateau, the domaine has long championed old vines, careful farming and minimal cellar manipulation to let Grenache and its terroirs speak clearly. Over the years, Gramenon has earned a devoted following among sommeliers and enthusiasts for its expressive, often botti‑aged and concrete‑raised reds that balance concentration with remarkable drinkability. Poignée de Raisins is one of the estate’s most approachable cuvées, showcasing their philosophy in a pure, fruit‑forward style that still carries the stamp of this distinctive corner of the Rhône.
