Description
Domaine Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 2021 captures everything lovers of this village look for: perfume, finesse and an almost weightless intensity. The cooler 2021 vintage suits Roumier’s style beautifully, giving a wine that is both vividly aromatic and exquisitely balanced. This is a particularly charming and classical expression of Chambolle that many purists are already favoring over its richer 2020 counterpart.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 shows a bright, luminous ruby hue with a delicate translucence typical of top Chambolle. The nose is immediately beguiling: peonies and rose petals mingle with freshly picked raspberries, wild strawberries and a twist of blood orange, underscored by subtle mineral and spice notes.
On the palate, this is medium to medium-plus in body, with a silken texture and an enveloping core of scented red fruit. The lively acidity gives the wine a mouthwatering, almost crystalline precision, while ultra-fine, melting tannins glide across the finish. There is impressive intensity without heaviness, and a long, floral-tinged aftertaste that lifts rather than saturates the palate. Already hard to resist in its youth, it should evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity while retaining its signature elegance.
Production
Sourced from selected village-level parcels around Chambolle-Musigny, this wine reflects the commune’s limestone-rich soils with varying proportions of clay that give both finesse and depth. The domaine farms with great care and restraint, favoring low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Pinot Noir grapes make it to the winery. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts, with a judicious proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage, to enhance perfume and structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—only a modest percentage new—to allow the terroir’s character to shine through, before bottling with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny is an ideal partner for refined dishes that echo its delicacy: roast chicken with herbs, veal or pork tenderloin, duck breast with cherries or orange, and classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin made with subtle seasoning. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffled pasta, and mild, creamy cheeses like Brillat-Savarin or young Comté. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic lift. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the bouquet fully unfurl in its youth, but avoid vigorous aeration to preserve its fine-boned structure and floral nuance.
Producer
Founded in the 1920s and based in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Georges Roumier is one of Burgundy’s benchmark estates and a reference point for Pinot Noir worldwide. Over generations, the Roumier family has built a reputation for wines that marry depth and longevity with remarkable elegance and purity of expression. Their holdings span some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted crus, and their fastidious work in the vines and cellar has made the domaine a touchstone for classic, terroir-driven Burgundy. Roumier’s Chambolle-Musigny Village is often cited as one of the appellation’s finest benchmarks, delivering a remarkably complete experience of the village’s character even at the so-called ‘entry’ level.
