Description
Domaine Raveneau’s Chablis 1er Cru Forêt 2017 is a benchmark expression of Premier Cru Chablis, combining mature complexity with the electric energy that has made Raveneau one of Burgundy’s most revered names. Sourced from one of Chablis’ most distinguished vineyards, it shows the class, precision, and site transparency collectors prize in this legendary producer’s wines.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a refined, golden-tinged appearance, reflecting its early maturity. On the nose, it opens with citrus oil, white flowers, crushed chalk, and subtle nutty notes, all lifted by a fresh, precise mineral character.
The palate is medium-bodied and tightly focused, with layered flavors of salt-laced citrus, lemon zest, and delicate oxidative nuances that add depth without heaviness. Despite its development, the wine retains vibrant acidity and a firm mineral backbone, giving it remarkable balance and a long, linear finish. It is drinking beautifully now, yet has the structure to evolve gracefully over several more years.
Production
Forêt is one of Chablis’ top Premier Cru sites, known for its chalky Kimmeridgian soils that bring precision, tension, and a distinctly saline-mineral profile to the wine. The 2017 vintage reflects careful harvesting and Raveneau’s restrained, traditional approach in the cellar, allowing the vineyard’s character to remain front and center. Vinification is classically Burgundian, with a focus on purity, texture, and measured élevage that preserves freshness while building complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as oysters, scallops, lobster, turbot, roast poultry with cream sauces, and elegant mushroom-based dishes. Serve it lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider a short decant if opening now to allow its aromatics to unfold. If served from a younger bottle, a gentle decant can help reveal its full aromatic range; older bottles should be handled with more care.
Producer
Domaine Raveneau is one of the most iconic producers in Chablis, founded in the 1940s and long regarded as the reference standard for serious Chardonnay from the region. The domaine’s small production, meticulous vineyard work, and traditional winemaking have earned it an exceptional reputation among collectors and sommeliers worldwide. Its wines are celebrated for their purity, longevity, and profound expression of Chablis terroir.
