Description
Domaine Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru 2020 is a beautifully composed white Burgundy that captures the precision and lift of this elevated Premier Cru site. From one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most respected domaines, it combines crystalline minerality, refined fruit, and the classically poised style that has made Etienne Sauzet a benchmark name in Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, this wine opens with a highly fragrant nose of pear, green apple, lime, and delicate white flowers, layered with a subtle hint of mint and gentle spice. The bouquet feels airy and refined, with an underlying mineral clarity that immediately signals its hillside origin.
The palate is sleek and focused, yet with notable depth and presence. White peach, citrus, and a touch of tropical fruit unfold over a taut, chalk-driven structure, supported by vibrant acidity that is well integrated rather than sharp. The finish is long, clean, and mineral, with a discreet spicy echo. While already expressive, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for around 8–10 years, gaining more complexity and texture over time.
Production
La Garenne is a high-lying Premier Cru vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet, where limestone-rich soils and strong exposure contribute to the wine’s tension, freshness, and pronounced mineral character. The 2020 vintage brought a little extra ripeness and softness to the texture, while preserving the site’s naturally cool, linear profile. Vinification is carried out in the classic white Burgundy style, with careful handling aimed at preserving purity, precision, and the distinct identity of the vineyard.
Food & Serving
This is a fine match for dishes that complement rather than overpower its elegance: roasted or pan-seared turbot, lobster with butter sauce, scallops, poultry in cream sauce, or gently aged goat’s cheese. Serve at around 10–12°C to allow the aromatics and texture to show at their best. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if served young.
Producer
Domaine Etienne Sauzet is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most highly regarded estates, with a long-standing reputation for producing precise, terroir-driven Chardonnay of exceptional finesse. The domaine is widely recognized for its disciplined, elegant style and for expressing the nuances of Burgundy’s finest climats with clarity. Its wines have earned a strong following among collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts alike for their consistency, balance, and aging potential.
