Description

Domaine Etienne Sauzet Montrachet Grand Cru 2004 is a rare and prestigious white Burgundy from one of the world’s most celebrated Chardonnay vineyards. Produced by one of Puligny-Montrachet’s leading domaines, it combines exceptional power, mineral precision and elegance—qualities that have made Montrachet a benchmark for fine white wine.

Tasting Notes
Deep golden in appearance, reflecting its age and long development in bottle. The nose is intricate and layered, offering ripe citrus, candied lemon, white peach, honey and baked apple, followed by refined notes of toasted hazelnut, brioche, butter and wet limestone. With time in the glass, additional nuances of truffle, smoke and exotic spice may emerge. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, yet remarkably energetic. Lively acidity and a pronounced mineral character provide balance to the wine’s richness, while waves of mature fruit, nuts and savoury complexity build toward an exceptionally long finish. After more than two decades of maturation, the 2004 is showing impressive depth and finesse, although further development will depend on its storage conditions.

Production
The wine comes from Montrachet Grand Cru, the legendary vineyard shared between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet and widely regarded as one of Burgundy’s greatest sites for Chardonnay. Its limestone-rich terroir contributes the wine’s characteristic combination of richness, structure and mineral intensity. Etienne Sauzet is known for a strong focus on vineyard work and the expression of terroir; detailed information about the specific harvesting and vinification methods for this bottle is not available.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 12–14°C, allowing the wine to open and reveal its full complexity. It is an excellent match for refined dishes such as lobster, turbot, scallops, roasted poultry with cream sauce, veal, foie gras or mature soft-ripened cheeses. Given its age and delicacy, decanting is not essential, but a careful decant of 30–60 minutes can help open the wine if it initially appears closed. For older bottles, gentle handling is recommended to preserve any sediment and protect the wine’s aromatic balance.

Producer
Domaine Etienne Sauzet is one of the most respected names in Puligny-Montrachet. With a history dating back to the early 20th century, the domaine has built an international reputation for expressive, precise and age-worthy white Burgundy, with a particular emphasis on Chardonnay’s relationship with its vineyard site. Montrachet Grand Cru is the crown jewel of the domaine’s portfolio, showcasing the extraordinary potential of both this historic terroir and the producer’s meticulous approach.
