Description
Domaine du Pégau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 2015 is a benchmark Southern Rhône red, crafted in a deeply traditional style and built for both pleasure and longevity. Drawn from old vines and bottled without compromise, it marries wild Provençal character with astonishing finesse and complexity. The 2015 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was particularly generous, and this wine has now had time in bottle to knit together into something truly compelling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Cuvée Réservée shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a hint of garnet at the rim, reflecting both concentration and the first signs of graceful evolution. The nose is intensely expressive: violets and ripe cherries lead the way, layered with subtle allspice and clove, and the classic garrigue notes that define great Châteauneuf—lavender, thyme, and dried herbs.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, with a core of dark cherry, raspberry, and plum wrapped in savory undertones of black olive, tapenade, and a faint suggestion of tar. The tannins are polished yet present, giving structure without harshness, and the long, silky finish fans out with spice, dried flowers, and sun‑baked herbs. Already drinking beautifully, this 2015 still has the concentration and balance to evolve for another 10–15 years under proper cellaring conditions, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
Domaine du Pégau sources Cuvée Réservée from old-vine parcels spread across the varied terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, combining galets roulés (large rounded stones), sand, and clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The blend is predominantly Grenache, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre and small amounts of other permitted Rhône varieties, often fermented with whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and structure. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. Vinification follows a firmly traditional approach: long, slow fermentations in concrete, aging in large, old oak foudres, and bottling without filtration, allowing the wine to express its terroir with maximum authenticity and depth.
Food & Serving
This 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural partner for robust, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, roast duck with cherries, grilled ribeye, or hearty game stews. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring Provençal herbs, ratatouille, wild mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F); if the bottle is young or recently opened, a decant of 1–2 hours will help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic and textural complexity.
Producer
Domaine du Pégau is one of the most revered traditional estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, family-run and deeply rooted in the region’s history. Led by Laurence Féraud and her father Paul, the domaine has become a reference point for lovers of old-school Southern Rhône wines—wines that favor authenticity, low intervention, and the honest expression of place over polish. Pégau’s Cuvée Réservée is their flagship bottling and is consistently counted among the appellation’s finest, regularly receiving acclaim from critics and collectors for its age-worthiness, complexity, and unmistakable regional character.
