Description

Domaine du Pegau Da Capo 2016 is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s rarest and most coveted wines, released only in exceptional vintages. Often compared with the great icons of the Rhône, it represents the estate’s most ambitious expression of power, precision, and old-vine complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Da Capo 2016 pours an inky, near-black purple, setting the tone for a wine of extraordinary concentration. The nose is immediately captivating, unfolding layers of ripe black plum, blackberry, cracked pepper, liquorice, smoked meat, truffle, crème de cassis, violets, and garrigue herbs. On the palate, it is dense and intense yet impeccably balanced, with dark fruit and peppery spice carrying through to a profoundly long finish. Despite its richness, the wine remains composed and seamless, and its structure suggests outstanding aging potential over many years, even decades.

Production
Da Capo is crafted only in years deemed exceptional, with a highly selective process across three vineyard sites and an assemblage that includes 13 grape varieties, led by Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The grapes are pressed whole and fermented for around 10 days in cement tanks with native yeasts, keeping intervention to an absolute minimum. The wine is then matured for two years in carefully chosen old oak barrels, allowing the depth of the fruit and the character of the terroir to come through unmasked.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for equally rich and flavourful dishes, such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, braised short ribs, or truffle-based cuisine. It will also shine with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if possible to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its aromatic complexity.

Producer
Domaine du Pegau is one of the benchmark producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, long respected for its traditional approach and its commitment to expressive, age-worthy wines. Under Laurence Féraud, the estate has earned a formidable reputation among collectors and critics alike, particularly for wines that capture both the power and soul of the southern Rhône. Da Capo stands as the domaine’s flagship cuvée and one of its greatest achievements.
