Domaine du Pégaü’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2016 is a classic Southern Rhône benchmark: powerful, layered, and unmistakably old-school in style. Built around a Grenache-led blend of 13 grape varieties, it combines concentration with remarkable finesse and has long been one of the estate’s most admired wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark ruby color that hints at the wine’s richness. The nose is generous and complex, opening with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and thyme; with air, notes of leather and sandalwood begin to emerge. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and deeply flavored, yet balanced by impressive poise and structure. Dark fruit, clove, white pepper, and the same herbal tones from the bouquet drive a long, satisfying finish. While already expressive in youth, this 2016 has the depth to improve over the next 5 years and should drink beautifully for up to 20 years or more.

Production
This Réserve is sourced from Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards in the Rhône, where pebbly, heat-retaining soils and the region’s warm, dry climate help Grenache ripen fully while preserving character. The blend contains 13 grape varieties, with about 80% Grenache at its core, supported by Mourvèdre and Syrah. Harvested by hand, the grapes are pressed as whole clusters, fermented in cement vats with native yeasts, and then aged for two years in used oak barrels to preserve purity and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for robust, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb, game, beef stew, grilled ribeye, or herb-crusted duck. It also works well with Mediterranean fare like lamb tagine or ratatouille with roasted vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
