Domaine du Pegau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservée is one of the estate’s most celebrated cuvées, and the 2003 vintage comes in an impressive 300cl format for collectors and special occasions. Built on a traditional blend led by Grenache, it delivers the kind of depth, structure, and authenticity that has made Pegau a benchmark name in the Rhône.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a deeply colored, насыщенный red with a dense core that hints at its richness and concentration. The nose opens with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and wild Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and thyme, gradually unfolding into notes of leather and sandalwood with air.
The palate is powerful yet finely shaped, combining dark fruit, clove, white pepper, and savory herb character with impressive balance. The wine has the concentration and structure to develop beautifully over time, and in this large format it should age especially well, offering excellent drinking over the next 20–25 years.
Production
Réservée is a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend based on 80% Grenache, supported by the region’s traditional assortment of up to 13 grape varieties. At Domaine du Pegau, the grapes are pressed as whole clusters, fermented in cement vats with native yeasts, and then matured for two years in older oak casks, a method that preserves purity while building complexity and texture. The 2003 vintage reflects the warmth and generosity of the southern Rhône terroir, with concentration and ripeness supported by the estate’s traditional vinification approach.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for hearty dishes such as roast lamb, game, braised beef, herb-crusted meats, and rich stews, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant well in advance if drinking young; even with maturity, a generous decant can help the wine fully раскрыться and show its layered aromatics.
Producer
Domaine du Pegau is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most respected estates, closely associated with the traditional, full-bodied style of the appellation. Under Laurence Féraud, the domaine has built a strong international following, especially for its Réservée and the more limited Da Capo cuvée. It is widely admired for combining old-school winemaking with remarkable consistency and aging potential.
