Domaine du Pegau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 2020 is one of the Rhône’s most celebrated classic reds, prized for its depth, authenticity, and remarkable value for a wine of this stature. Built around a dominant Grenache core and supported by the traditional Châteauneuf blend, it captures the estate’s old-school style and long-standing reputation for producing wines with both power and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark ruby color that hints at the intensity to come. The nose opens with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and a distinctly herbal streak of rosemary and thyme, followed with air by notes of leather and sandalwood. The palate is full-bodied and layered, delivering concentrated dark fruit wrapped around clove, white pepper, and savory Mediterranean herbs. Despite its richness, the wine retains admirable balance and precision, with the structure to develop beautifully over the next 5 years and the potential to age for 20-25 years or more.

Production
Made from a traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend of 13 grape varieties, with approximately 80% Grenache at the core, the wine reflects the character of the Rhône’s galet-strewn terroir and sun-drenched vineyards. The grapes are pressed whole, fermentations take place in cement tanks with native yeasts, and the wine is then matured for two years in used oak barrels to preserve purity while adding complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for slow-roasted lamb, game, beef stew, grilled meats, and rich Provençal dishes with herbs and garlic. Serve it at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1-2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and structure to खुल fully.
