Description
Domaine du Pegau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is one of the Rhône Valley’s most admired benchmark reds, and the 2017 Magnum captures the estate’s signature mix of power, nuance, and old-school character. Made from a traditional blend of 13 grape varieties, with Grenache leading the way, it’s a wine that has built a devoted following for good reason. In magnum format, it offers even greater ageing potential and a more graceful evolution in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a deep, dark, and saturated red, hinting at the concentration within. The nose is expressive and layered, showing blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, fresh rosemary, thyme, and, with time in the glass, notes of leather and sandalwood.
The palate is bold yet finely balanced, with rich dark fruit at the core and savory accents of clove, white pepper, and Mediterranean herbs echoing the aromatics. It has impressive depth and structure, but also a sense of finesse that keeps it from feeling heavy. The 2017 vintage is already highly enjoyable, yet it will continue to develop beautifully for at least 5 years and can cellar for 20–25 years or more.
Production
Produced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône, the wine comes from a terroir of sun-drenched vineyards and the region’s classic stony soils, which help retain heat and support full ripening. Laurence Féraud follows a traditional approach: whole-cluster pressing, fermentation in cement vats with no added yeast, and maturation for two years in used oak barrels. The result is a wine that reflects both the vintage and the character of the estate’s historic style.
Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for hearty dishes such as grilled lamb, slow-roasted beef, game, braised short ribs, or herb-driven Mediterranean cuisine. It also works beautifully with rich stews and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and while it can be enjoyed young with some time to breathe, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to let the wine open fully.
Producer
Domaine du Pegau is one of the most respected producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a reputation for producing deeply traditional wines that have become references for the appellation. Under Laurence Féraud, the domaine has earned a loyal international following for its authentic style and consistently impressive quality. Its flagship Cuvée Réservée is widely regarded as a classic expression of the region and one of the estate’s most celebrated achievements.
