Description
Domaine du Pegau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 2000 is a benchmark Rhône red, admired for its depth, complexity, and unmistakable old-school character. Built on a traditional field-blend approach and led by Grenache, it captures the historic soul of Châteauneuf-du-Pape while delivering serious power, finesse, and remarkable value for a wine of this pedigree.
Tasting Notes
Deep, inky ruby in the glass, this 2000 shows remarkable richness and presence. The bouquet opens with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, fresh rosemary, and thyme, gradually unfolding into notes of leather and sandalwood with time in the glass.
On the palate, it is broad and intense, with dark fruit, clove, white pepper, and savory Mediterranean herbs carried by a firm yet polished structure. The wine has excellent aging potential: it is already beautifully expressive, will continue to improve over the next 5 years, and can comfortably remain at a very high level for around 20 years in total.
Production
Made from a traditional blend of 13 grape varieties, this cuvée is dominated by Grenache, which accounts for around 80% of the blend, with Mourvèdre and Syrah providing added structure and spice. The grapes are vinified with whole clusters and fermented in cement tanks without added yeast, before aging for two years in used oak barrels. The result is a wine that reflects both the warmth of the Rhône terroir and Domaine du Pegau’s deeply traditional winemaking philosophy.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for rich, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb, game, slow-braised beef, duck confit, or herb-crusted meats. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and Provençal-style dishes featuring rosemary, thyme, and black olives. Serve at 16–18°C and, given its complexity and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open.
