Description

Domaine du Gringet’s Le Feu 2023 is one of Savoie’s most iconic single-vineyard white wines, often spoken of as a de facto “grand cru” for the region. This pure Gringet bottling harnesses the vineyard’s exceptional exposure, old vines, and complex soils to deliver a wine of rare precision and depth. The cooler 2023 vintage has given Le Feu extra lift and freshness, making this release particularly vibrant and finely etched.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Feu 2023 shows a pale straw color with green reflections, hinting at its alpine origin and brisk acidity. The nose is immediately expressive: think white flowers, freshly cut apple and pear, citrus zest, and a chalky, smoky mineral character, with subtle herbal and alpine notes that bring to mind mountain meadows. On the palate, the wine is tense, linear, and deeply refreshing, with the naturally high acidity of Gringet sharpened by the cooler 2023 growing season. Bright citrus, green apple, and stone fruit are layered over a core of saline minerality, with a gently savory, almost umami finish that lingers. Alcohol is modest and beautifully integrated, amplifying the wine’s clarity rather than weight. While already extremely engaging in its youth, Le Feu 2023 has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more texture, complexity, and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Le Feu comes from one of Savoie’s most celebrated hillside sites, marked by steep slopes, excellent sun exposure, and poor, mineral-rich soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The combination of altitude and mountain climate preserves acidity and aromatic delicacy, giving the wine its trademark alpine freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to protect the fragile Gringet berries and enable strict selection in the vineyard. Vinification is deliberately restrained and closely aligned with the domain’s other single-vineyard wines: gentle pressing, native fermentations, and aging on fine lees in neutral vessels, allowing the singular character of this site to shine without heavy oak influence or overt winemaking signatures.

Food & Serving
Le Feu 2023 is an outstanding partner for delicate yet flavorful dishes: freshwater fish, shellfish, and seafood crudo, as well as alpine specialties such as raclette or fondue, where its acidity cuts effortlessly through richness. It also pairs beautifully with goat’s cheese, Comté, vegetable terrines, and lightly spiced Asian cuisine where brightness and precision are key. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle in advance, can help the wine broaden on the palate and reveal more of its subtle floral and mineral complexity.

Producer
Domaine du Gringet is a leading champion of the rare Gringet grape in Savoie, and one of the key estates responsible for elevating the region’s reputation among serious wine lovers. Working with carefully farmed high-altitude vineyards and an uncompromising focus on expressing terroir, the domaine has become synonymous with precise, mineral-driven white wines that capture the spirit of the Alps. The Le Feu vineyard, in particular, has gained near-mythic status as a reference point for what Gringet can achieve in the right site, and the domaine’s single-vineyard bottlings are now widely sought after by collectors and sommeliers alike.
