Description

Domaine du Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Épeneaux 2003 is a distinguished expression of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards. Produced from Pinot Noir in the historic Clos des Épeneaux monopole, the wine combines the warmth and concentration of the exceptional 2003 vintage with the structure, freshness and earthy character for which Pommard is renowned. After more than two decades of maturation, it offers a rare opportunity to experience a fully developed and highly individual Burgundy.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a mature ruby colour with garnet hues. Its complex bouquet reveals ripe cherries, dark woodland berries and plums, followed by layers of warm spice, leather, forest floor and subtle tobacco. The generous fruit profile reflects the hot 2003 growing season, while the aromatic development brings depth and refinement. On the palate, it is rich, velvety and harmonious, with beautifully integrated tannins and impressive concentration. Flavours of dark cherry, mature red fruit, spice and earthy terroir unfold gradually, leading to a long, persistent finish. This is a mature Burgundy with considerable complexity and personality, best enjoyed now or over the next few years if carefully stored.

Production
The wine comes from Clos des Épeneaux, a renowned Premier Cru monopole in Pommard and the flagship vineyard of Domaine du Comte Armand. Pommard’s limestone- and clay-influenced soils provide the structure and savoury depth associated with the appellation, while the warm 2003 vintage contributed exceptional ripeness and concentration. The specific harvesting and vinification details for this bottle are not provided, but the finished wine clearly reflects both the vineyard’s distinctive terroir and the vintage’s generous conditions.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest upright. A careful decant of around 30–60 minutes can help separate any sediment and allow the mature aromas to open, although older bottles should be monitored to preserve their nuance. Its combination of depth and velvety texture makes it an excellent partner for roast duck, game birds, beef tenderloin, mushroom dishes, truffle preparations and well-seasoned pâtés.

Producer
Domaine du Comte Armand is one of Pommard’s historic and most respected estates, closely identified with the Clos des Épeneaux monopole. This exceptional vineyard has long served as the domaine’s signature site and is regarded as one of the appellation’s most important Premier Cru holdings. Its wines are valued for their ability to unite Pommard’s characteristic structure and earthy depth with elegance, complexity and long-term ageing potential.
