Description

Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s most storied Grand Cru sites, and the 1999 Mommessin Clos de Tart captures the depth and authority that have made this monopole so revered. Crafted from Pinot Noir in one of the Côte de Nuits’ most celebrated vineyards, it offers a rare glimpse into a vintage that combines maturity, structure, and unmistakable Grand Cru presence.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows the graceful evolution expected from a well-aged Burgundy, with a colour that has likely softened toward garnet and brick-red tones. The bouquet is layered and refined, unfolding with red plum, bergamot, dried rose petals, and a cool stony character, followed by more savoury notes of black pepper, bay leaf, and Earl Grey tea. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with firm, strict tannins and impressive weight. The fruit has moved into a more tertiary phase, giving the wine a complex, seasoned profile rather than youthful brightness. It still carries excellent length and presence, and while it is fully mature, it can continue to hold for a little longer under ideal cellar conditions.

Production
Clos de Tart lies in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, where its Grand Cru status and unique monopole ownership make it exceptional. The site’s terroir is defined by limestone and clay soils with excellent drainage, helping Pinot Noir develop both concentration and finesse. The 1999 vintage would have been harvested by hand, as is customary in Burgundy, with vinification focused on preserving fruit purity, structure, and the distinctive mineral identity of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This is a superb wine for classic, deeply flavoured dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, game birds, beef fillet, or mushroom-based dishes like wild mushroom tart or truffled risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if the bottle shows any reduction, though older bottles should be handled gently and tasted first to gauge their condition.

Producer
Mommessin is a historic Burgundy name, and Clos de Tart itself has long been regarded as one of the region’s greatest vineyards. The domaine’s reputation is closely tied to the singular character of this Grand Cru site, which has earned acclaim for producing wines of remarkable depth, longevity, and complexity. The 1999 vintage is especially notable for its structure and persistence, reflecting both the quality of the site and the careful stewardship associated with the estate.
