Description

Clos de Tart 2021 is a Grand Cru Burgundy of rare pedigree, crafted from the historic monopole vineyard owned exclusively by Domaine du Clos de Tart. In this cooler, classic vintage, the wine marries immediate charm with impressive depth and structure, making it both captivating young and promising for the cellar. This is a benchmark expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most storied sites, where winemaking dates back to the 12th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos de Tart shows a luminous, deep ruby hue with a vibrant, almost crystalline edge. The nose slowly unfurls with sweet red berries, ripe plum, and wild strawberry, layered with orange zest, rose petal, and delicate sweet spices. Hints of subtle forest floor, fine tea leaves, and a touch of sandalwood add complexity as it opens. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and fleshy yet remarkably poised, offering a textured, almost caressing attack that flows into a layered, enveloping mid-palate. Ripe red and black fruits are wrapped in sweet, powdery tannins and lifted by fresh, well-integrated acidity. The finish is long, refined, and already harmonious, but there is clearly more to come as the wine gains in complexity with time. While approachable in its youth for its aromatic charm and silky texture, this 2021 Clos de Tart has the structure and depth to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Clos de Tart is a single, walled Grand Cru vineyard in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, planted on a mosaic of clay-limestone soils with excellent drainage and an ideal southeast exposure. The domaine farms the vineyard with meticulous care, using careful plot-by-plot management and low yields to capture the nuances of its unique terroir. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously, and vinified in small lots to respect each parcel’s character. Traditional Burgundian methods are employed, often with a judicious proportion of whole clusters, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant share new) to add structure and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The result is a wine that eloquently expresses both place and vintage.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir is a natural match for refined dishes such as roast pigeon, duck breast with cherries or orange, veal loin, or lamb saddle with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with delicate game birds, truffled poultry, and mature but not overly strong cheeses like Comté or aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic finesse and freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open and show its layered complexity; with more bottle age, a gentle splash-decant just before serving is sufficient.

Producer
Domaine du Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s great historic estates, with documented viticultural roots stretching back to 1141, when Cistercian nuns first tended the vines. Unusually for Burgundy, Clos de Tart is a monopole Grand Cru, meaning the entire vineyard is owned and managed by a single domaine, ensuring a rare continuity of style and vision across centuries. The property has long been regarded as a reference point for powerful yet refined Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir, and in recent decades it has garnered widespread acclaim for its precision, terroir focus, and consistency across challenging vintages. Today, Clos de Tart stands as a benchmark producer in Morey-Saint-Denis and a cornerstone name in the world of fine Burgundy.
