Description
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 is a poised and finely etched expression of one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s coolest, most mineral-driven climats. Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, this is a red Burgundy for those who appreciate precision, finesse and terroir detail over sheer power. Sitting slightly in the shadow of its more famous neighbors, Latricières-Chambertin has long been prized by insiders for its tension, energy and ageworthy elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Latricières-Chambertin shows a luminous, translucent ruby hue that hints at its refinement rather than density. The bouquet is beautifully defined and lifted, with aromas of wild blackberry, red cherry and blackcurrant layered over crushed stone, orange blossom, and a whisper of sous-bois and spice. There is an immediate sense of limestone-driven clarity and coolness on the nose.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied and supremely elegant, with ultra-fine tannins that feel almost chalk-dusted rather than grippy. Dark berry fruits mingle with redcurrant, blood orange zest and a saline, stony minerality that runs through the core of the wine. The acidity is bright and refreshing, giving the wine a taut, linear profile and more edge and energy than its sibling, Chapelle-Chambertin. The finish is long, pure and mouthwatering, promising excellent development in bottle. While already impressive in its youth, this Grand Cru will really start to show its full complexity after 3–5 years and should age gracefully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Latricières-Chambertin is a celebrated Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, on the cooler, wind-exposed southern side of the appellation, with thin, well-drained limestone and marl soils that naturally give wines of finesse and pronounced minerality. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze farms these parcels with meticulous care, favoring low yields and careful canopy management to ensure full but balanced ripeness in a cooler vintage such as 2021. The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested by hand, sorted rigorously in the vineyard and at the winery, then vinified traditionally: gentle destemming, a cold maceration to draw out delicate aromatics, followed by fermentation in vat with careful extraction to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, allowing the Grand Cru structure to integrate with subtle oak spice while keeping the focus firmly on terroir expression and purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a superb match for refined dishes that complement its nuance rather than overpower it: think roasted duck breast with cherries, veal tenderloin with morels, pigeon, or delicately sauced game birds. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffle-infused cuisine, and aged but not overly powerful cow’s milk cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort. Serve at around 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the bouquet open and the tannins soften; with additional bottle age, a gentle decant mainly to remove sediment is sufficient.
