Description
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares 2022 is a Grand Cru Burgundy that captures the power and precision of this legendary vineyard in a particularly focused, refined style. Rated 93/100 by Vinøs, it offers a darker, more intense expression than the 2023, while still remaining beautifully poised. This is classic Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir from one of Bonnes-Mares’ historic owners, uniting silk, structure and fragrant complexity in a single, ageworthy bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Bonnes Mares shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with a youthful sheen that hints at both concentration and freshness. The bouquet is finely etched and layered: black cherries and wild strawberries rise first, followed by notes of iris blossom, violets and subtle underbrush. With air, more detail emerges—hints of redcurrant, crushed stone, and a delicate touch of sweet spice.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet impressively intense, with a taut, linear profile that is quite refined for Bonnes-Mares. The entry is fresh and precise, driven by pure, cool red and black berry fruit. A core of ripe but finely grained tannins runs through the wine, supported by lively acidity that gives lift and definition. The finish is bright, long and lively rather than massive, emphasizing clarity and floral elegance over sheer power. While already very appealing in its youth with a short decant, it has the balance and structure to develop beautifully over 10–15+ years, gaining further aromatic complexity and textural silkiness.
Production
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru straddles Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis on classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils, with a mix of lighter, chalky "white" terres blanches and deeper, iron-tinged "red" terres rouges. This mosaic of terroirs gives wines that combine Chambolle’s floral finesse with Morey’s firmer structure. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze farms these prized parcels with meticulous care, harvesting by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and tension in the fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified as whole berries or with a judicious proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage, then fermented gently to extract fine, silky tannins rather than heaviness. Aging takes place in French oak barrels (with a thoughtful use of new oak) to support, rather than dominate, the wine’s aromatic profile, resulting in a precise, terroir-driven Grand Cru.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Bonnes Mares is an exceptional partner for refined yet flavourful dishes: think roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal sweetbreads, or a rack of lamb with herbs and jus. It also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes, truffled poultry, or aged, hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or a well-matured Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C to highlight its aromatic lift and fine structure. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to open the bouquet and smooth the tannins; with more bottle age, a gentle splash-decant shortly before serving is sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is a historic, family-run estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, with roots dating back to the mid-19th century and a reputation built on some of the Côte de Nuits’ most prestigious grands crus. Over generations, the family has assembled an enviable patchwork of top sites, including Bonnes-Mares, Chambertin and Clos de Bèze, and has become known for wines that combine depth and longevity with precision and finesse. Today, the domaine is regarded as a benchmark in its part of Burgundy, successfully marrying tradition with thoughtful, modern vineyard and cellar practices to produce Pinot Noir that speaks clearly of its origins.
