Description
Denis Mortet’s Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 1998 is a beautifully composed Burgundy that combines the depth of a great site with the precision and finesse for which the domaine became famous. From one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most respected premier cru vineyards, this vintage shows the concentration, structure, and aromatic intensity that have made Mortet’s wines so sought after by collectors.
Tasting Notes
Deep bright ruby in the glass, this wine opens with vivid aromas of black raspberry, mocha, smoked meat, sweet oak, and a distinct toasted, torrefied edge. On the palate it is fuller, richer, and more aromatic than many wines from the appellation, with generous fruit wrapped in a firm but polished frame.
The wine offers substantial depth and remarkable length, finishing with ripe tannins and a long, resonant aftertaste. While already expressive, it has the structure to continue evolving gracefully, gaining more nuance and savoury complexity with additional cellaring.
Production
The wine comes from Lavaux St. Jacques, a premier cru site in Gevrey-Chambertin known for producing wines with both power and elegance. Domaine Denis Mortet has long focused on careful vineyard work and respect for the soil, with no herbicides or synthetic fertilizers used since 1996, and an emphasis on maintaining healthy, balanced vines that yield small berries with excellent concentration.
Vinification at the domaine is geared toward preserving purity, texture, and the natural character of Pinot Noir. The result is a wine that reflects its terroir clearly, combining classic Burgundian structure with a refined, fresh, and silken expression.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs especially well with roast duck, lamb, game birds, veal, or dishes with mushrooms and truffles. It also works beautifully with hard cheeses and richly flavoured poultry preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if opened young or to help the wine fully unfold in the glass.
Producer
Domaine Denis Mortet is a family-owned estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, founded in 1956 by Charles Mortet with just one hectare of vines. Under Denis Mortet, who took over in 1992, the domaine expanded and gained wide recognition for producing deeply expressive, finely structured Pinot Noir from top sites across Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, and beyond.
Since 2006, the estate has been run by Laurence Mortet and her children, Arnaud and Clémence, who continue the family’s commitment to quality and vineyard stewardship. The domaine is highly regarded in Burgundy for its meticulous approach in the vines and its wines’ ability to combine classic structure with remarkable freshness and elegance.
