Description
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s La Tâche 1999 is one of Burgundy’s most coveted Pinot Noir wines, combining rarity, precision, and exceptional depth. From a legendary Grand Cru monopole in Vosne-Romanée, it represents the kind of historic, ageworthy red that has made DRC a benchmark for the region and the world.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Tâche 1999 shows the poise and intensity expected of a great mature Burgundy, with a deeply colored core and a subtle, refined sheen. The nose opens slowly, revealing mineral complexity, wilted violets, potpourri, dark plum, cassis, and a touch of exotic spice, all framed by elegant oak and a cool, stony freshness.
On the palate, it is powerful yet beautifully symmetrical, with plush dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and an almost effortless sense of flow. The structure is serious and long-lived, but the wine’s silkiness and precision keep it graceful throughout. This is a wine with immense aging potential, and while already compelling, it is still capable of evolving for many more years in bottle.
Production
La Tâche comes from a revered Grand Cru monopole in Vosne-Romanée, where Domaine de la Romanée-Conti works with extremely low yields, meticulous hand-harvesting, and strict vineyard selection. The domaine farms organically and incorporates biodynamic principles, always with an emphasis on expressing terroir as purely as possible.
In the cellar, the wine is handled with a traditional, minimal-intervention approach: natural fermentation, careful use of large old oak, and ageing in new French oak barrels for around 16 to 18 months. The goal is not to shape the wine, but to preserve the character of the site and the vintage.
Food & Serving
La Tâche 1999 is best served with refined dishes that can complement its complexity without overwhelming it, such as roast duck, pigeon, squab, lamb with herbs, or wild mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based cuisine and aged cheeses.
Serve at around 16–18°C. Given its slow evolution and layered structure, decanting is recommended, but gently and not too far in advance—about 30 to 60 minutes before serving is usually ideal for an older wine of this style.
Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, based in Vosne-Romanée, is widely regarded as one of Burgundy’s greatest estates and is often described as the “King of Burgundy.” Its history reaches back to the 13th century, and over time the domaine has assembled an extraordinary collection of Grand Cru vineyards, all farmed with exceptional care and precision.
Under the leadership of Aubert de Villaine, the estate has maintained its uncompromising standards, with a strong focus on organic viticulture, low yields, and continuity in the cellar. DRC’s wines are among the most admired in the world, celebrated for purity, balance, and remarkable expression of place.
