Description

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the benchmark name for Grand Cru Burgundy, and Grands Échezeaux 2002 comes from one of the estate’s most coveted vineyards in Vosne-Romanée. Made from Pinot Noir and crafted with the meticulous, low-intervention approach that defines DRC, it offers a rare glimpse into the house style at its most refined and site-driven.

Tasting Notes
The 2002 Grands Échezeaux shows an expressive bouquet of flowers, perfume and black cherries, with hints of blackberries and gentle spice. On the palate it is satin-textured and light to medium-bodied, with a pretty, peppery fruit profile and a tannic finish that can show a touch of bitterness. While not among the longest-lived of the estate’s wines, it is a graceful Grand Cru that has developed beautifully within its anticipated window of maturity.

Production
Sourced from one of Burgundy’s prestigious Grand Cru sites, the wine reflects the depth and nuance of Vosne-Romanée terroir. All fruit is hand-harvested and rigorously sorted, with fermentation carried out traditionally in large old oak vats before aging for around 16 to 18 months in new French oak barrels. The estate works organically, with biodynamic principles increasingly integrated, and favors very low yields, massal selection and minimal cellar intervention to preserve purity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
Serve this wine with roasted duck, pheasant, venison, or dishes with mushroom, truffle and earthy forest notes that complement its perfume and spice. It is best enjoyed at around 16–18°C, and a careful decant of about 30–60 minutes can help open the aromatics if the bottle is still youthful. Handle gently, as this is a delicate Grand Cru that shines best with understated, elegant cuisine.

Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often called the “King of Burgundy,” is one of the most legendary domaines in the wine world. Based in Vosne-Romanée, it holds only Grand Cru vineyards and has built its reputation through exceptional vineyard stewardship, continuity in the cellar and an uncompromising dedication to quality. Under Aubert de Villaine’s leadership, alongside the Leroy family’s historic involvement, the estate has become synonymous with some of the most sought-after and admired Pinot Noir wines ever made.
