Description
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti needs little introduction: this exceptional 2003 assortment brings together one of Burgundy’s most legendary domaines and a rare selection of its most prized Pinot Noir expressions, including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux and Echézeaux. Presented in its original wooden case, it is a true collector’s item from a house whose reputation was built over centuries of unrivalled terroirs and meticulous winemaking.
Tasting Notes
Expect a fascinating study in Pinot Noir, with each cuvée showing its own character while remaining unmistakably DRC in purity and finesse. Romanée-Conti is described as exceptionally harmonious and richly layered, La Tâche as concentrated and velvety, Richebourg as powerful with remarkable longevity, while Romanée-St-Vivant brings a softer, more elegant touch; the two Echézeaux wines offer fuller fruit and structure.
Across the assortment, the common thread is refinement: vivid red fruit, floral lift, fine spice, earthy complexity and an unmistakable sense of depth. The 2003 vintage, shaped by warmth, can show more ripeness and generosity than cooler years, yet these wines have the concentration and balance to evolve beautifully for decades, especially in the best cellaring conditions.
Production
The domaine’s vineyards are among the most celebrated in Burgundy, rooted in some of the region’s finest limestone and clay soils, with parcels in Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux and Echézeaux. Farming is highly selective and largely biodynamic in spirit, with strict pruning, very low yields, hand harvesting and multiple sorting passes to ensure only the best fruit is kept. Fermentation is followed by aging for 16 to 18 months in new oak barrels from François Frères, adding structure and polish while preserving the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a wine collection for refined cuisine: think roasted pigeon, duck breast, veal tenderloin, truffle dishes, game birds, mushrooms and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C, and for the more powerful cuvées such as Richebourg or La Tâche, decanting can be helpful if the bottles are relatively open; however, for the most delicate wines, a gentle opening shortly before serving is often preferable to protect their aromatic detail.
Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of the most storied estates in the world, with roots reaching back more than eight centuries and a lineage shaped by some of Burgundy’s most influential owners. Since the 20th century, it has been under the leadership of Aubert de Villaine and Henri Roch, and it remains a benchmark for Grand Cru Burgundy. Its limited holdings, extraordinary terroirs and uncompromising standards have made it synonymous with rarity, prestige and some of the finest Pinot Noir ever produced.
