Description
Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2000 is a distinguished single-variety Grenache cuvée from one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected estates. Made from exceptionally old vines—some dating back to the early 20th century—it is celebrated for its elegance, depth and ability to express the warm, aromatic character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Now mature, the vintage offers remarkable complexity while retaining impressive energy and balance.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby colour with garnet and brick-red hues at the rim, reflecting its two decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet combines cherry liqueur, ripe dark berries, liquorice, pepper and Provençal herbs with more evolved notes of leather, dried flowers and garrigue—the wild Mediterranean herbs characteristic of the appellation.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet silk-textured, with generous Grenache fruit supported by warm spices, liquorice and savoury Mediterranean tones. The tannins are polished, while the freshness brings definition to the wine’s concentration. A long, persistent finish completes this harmonious and complex Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2000 vintage is drinking beautifully now and is best enjoyed in the near term to appreciate its mature character.
Production
Cuvée Chaupin is produced primarily from old Grenache vines planted in the distinctive terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the Mediterranean climate, stony soils and warm conditions encourage rich, concentrated fruit while preserving aromatic intensity. The grapes are carefully harvested at maturity and vinified to capture the purity and depth of the old-vine Grenache. Maturation allows the wine’s fruit, spice and savoury nuances to integrate, resulting in the supple texture and layered complexity associated with this sought-after cuvée.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest upright and carefully removing any sediment. A gentle decant of around 30–60 minutes can help open the wine, although older bottles should be handled with care and tasted first. Its generous, savoury profile pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef stew, game, duck, grilled red meats and Provençal dishes featuring garlic, rosemary or thyme. It also works well with mature cheeses.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse is one of the leading estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and has earned a strong reputation for combining traditional Rhône character with precision and elegance. The estate’s Cuvée Chaupin is among its most sought-after wines, prized for its use of very old Grenache vines and its expressive, age-worthy style. The 2000 vintage demonstrates why this cuvée has achieved cult status among Rhône enthusiasts: it offers depth, refinement and a vivid sense of place.
