Why shop with us?
Domaine de Chevalier 1978 is a mature Bordeaux red from one of the most respected estates in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. With more than four decades of bottle age, this historic vintage offers the opportunity to experience the elegance and complexity that develop in traditionally made Graves wines over time.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a mature ruby colour with garnet and brick-red tones, depending on its storage history. The bouquet may reveal dried blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, earthy notes and subtle smoky nuances, characteristic of aged Bordeaux.
On the palate, the wine should be approached for its finesse rather than youthful power, with softened tannins, savoury fruit and a lingering, complex finish. As a 1978, it is fully mature and best enjoyed now; its condition, fill level and provenance will be important indicators of how much life remains in the bottle.
Production
Domaine de Chevalier is situated on gravelly soils in the Pessac-Léognan area, where excellent drainage and naturally low-vigour conditions favour concentrated, structured wines. The estate traditionally produces its red wine from Bordeaux varieties, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by Merlot and other permitted grapes, although the precise blend for this 1978 bottling is not specified. The wine was made in the classic Bordeaux style and matured in oak before extended bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Its mature, savoury character should pair well with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game birds, mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. Decant carefully shortly before serving to remove any sediment, but avoid prolonged aeration until the wine has been tasted, as a mature 1978 may be delicate and can fade with excessive exposure to air.
Producer
Domaine de Chevalier is a historic estate in Léognan and one of the distinguished Cru Classé de Graves properties. The château is known for producing refined, age-worthy red and white wines from its gravelly vineyards, with a reputation built on balance, precision and long-term development. Its wines are considered among the leading expressions of the Pessac-Léognan region.
